Andydodge
Has anyone had this happen......occaisonally when I go to start the engine in my Plymouth, it will wind over, then catch and go to run but at that exact time the wipers cut in for a couple of wipes, with the dashtop switch being in the OFF position..........now in Oz VERY few mopars had the vaccum wiper setup, consequently this is not something I am overly familar with, I've checked the vaccum line from the carby,(which is an Oz Holden Stromberg, a common swap over here and not the cause of the problem) and cannot find a leak, and have also checked under the dash at the wiper motor......also when it does start the wipers don't continue to operate, it just happens when starting, and they flap back and forth a couple of times, it starts then thats it......I've also noticed that I have to hold the accelerator down a little more lately when starting, anyone got any ideas???......thanks, andyd
Robin (UK)
Sounds like the wiper motor valve is slightly open, even though wipers are 'off'. Can you hear any hissing? I'd take the hose off at the carb/manifold end, plug the hole and try to start the car to see if you then don't need the extra gas. If that works, looks like the wiper motor needs a fix or adjustment.
greg g
Well they are interconnected as mine will sometimes go to a lower park position when I shut the engnie off. I would think a slightly leaky valve is the likely culprit. it probably closes enoug to shut the wipers off against the drag of dry glass but nor completely closed. then during these high vacuum period it leaks enough for a couple of swips then will close. You mentioned that your's are hooked up to the carb. I believe all on this side of the pond are connected to a threaded port in the intake manifold. So I wonder where the vacuum is picked up for the carb port. Do you wipers slow or stop while accelerating or climbing hills?
Andydodge
Oops, the vaccum line runs from an intake manifold port just under the carby mount, I'll recheck the line etc again today and report back.....lol....andyd
Andydodge
Greg, the wipers are affected by the engine speed, flapping away on flat ground, barely moving up hills or when I am racing Ferraris(yeh right....lol).........most oz mopars from the 30's on had electric wipers, 6v tho but as the car is 12volt now trying to find a bolt in wiper motor is hard, I may even do what I did with my 1940 Dodge and put a BMC cable driven wiper setup in it, bit of fiddling around but works well........andyd
bob westphal
I haven't seen a car do this in many years. Sounds to me like you have a slight backfire problem!! They don't always make a bang when they backfire just a kind a poof! The reason the wipers work is because its forcing the wipers to run backards by blowing through the vacuum hose. Check your ignition timing or maybe the timing chain is worn
Andydodge
Bob, thanks for that, hadn't thought of that, will give it a though timing checkout and see what comes up, thanks, andyd
Andydodge
Bob, I checked the timing and it does appear that it was about 10 degrees out, I played with the points a while ago but didn't think I'd moved the dissy tho', anyway reset it and it does seem a lot crisper, thru some new plugs in while I was at it and almost gave a couple of Ferrari's a run for their money..............eerr, well maybe a Fiat Bambino in reverse.........lol.........but it certainly goes much better and starting seems a lot better......thanks for the suggestion....and the wipers haven't attacked me again.......so far..lol...regards, andyd
Plymouthy Adams
Andy..when changing the gap on the points, you will change the timing...
