Beatin The February Blahs Up North

Here is how you do it, you fire up that old Mopar and go for a cruise.

Thats what I did, it is about 28 outside, sunny and calm, a beautiful winter day. I decided to take my 5 year old son and go to the Clandeboye General Store, in Clandeboye, 5 miles by gravel road from my place.

It was a nice ride, the gravel road still had some solid ice on it, as it was around 0 here overnight. We passed by snowmobilers, they have a double take at the 47 Chrysler and wave, we drove by a skating rink, and the people wave, as you don't see car like mine every day around here, especially in winter.

Bought my son an ice cream cone at the store, and we headed home, the car ran great, and the engine temp was around 160. Upon arrival home I did an inspection of under the car to see if I had got it dirty much, hardly nothing, as I was going fairly slow, I did not drive on the highway, as it was wet with slush and ice melter chemical.

So this is how to beat the winter blahs up north, I know my car is not finished, not sure when it will be either, but I am having some fun with it already and plan to do more. The car will get finished when resources become available, in other words, when I have more cash she be fixed up more...............Fred

Well guys.............look at the bright side. There's less than a week left in February now. March is on it's way with better and a little warmer weather, then April showers brings May flowers. So..........winter is almost gone.

Fred, glad you got the old Chrysler out for a jaunt...sound like fun.

We drove out to Cochrane yesterday for some McKays ice cream, but I'm afraid they would MELT if left out too long...+12 (about 55f) there yesterday in the bright Alberta sun.

Sat on the bench looking at those beautiful snow covered Rockies to the west...a great day, just missing MY old Chrysler.

Sounds like a good time. I'd go for Hot Chocolate this time of year though. Wife bought some ice cream sandwiches last week. Ask me if I wanted one. Said no thanks, then she ate one. Then after eating it said she was cold. I didn't eat any of them. Only time I'll eat an ice cream is when its warm out.

I think this time of year, it's just wishful thinking wishing for spring. The sun's high enough now that we get some daytime heating but reality still bites at night:eek:

We were 40 below only a couple of weeks ago, so well above freezing is a heat wave...people out in shorts, light jackets etc.

We didn't have 40 below (except maybe in windchill). Now it's been in the 20's and 30's around here. When its in the 30's (like today about 35) and sunny, it feels like a nice spring day like you said. Even yesterday it was about the same, and everything melting nicely. Back to reality tomorrow afternoon though. Supposed to get cold in the afternoon, start out with some rain then, then turn to sleet, then snow. Supposed to get several inches up to about 6 inches or so of snow. But..........those days are numbered now.

The weatherman here says the high today will be in the 50s and within 2 days, the 70s. I think springtime is near.

I recall a neat litte flowering plant that used to be one of the first things to shoot up in springtime in the northeast, as the last snow was finally melting off. Think it was called a crocus. Hearty little plant with purple/violet flowers. You'd see them even before the first robin of spring showed up.

Norm, sorry but I don't feel sorry for you with those kinds of temperatures. Those aren't winter temperatures. Those are early summer temperatures. You've skipped fall, winter and spring.

Normspeed, the Crocus is Manitoba's official Provincial wild flower, you are right as soon as the snow melts off the ground they come up, we also have Lady Slippers, Wild Roses, Wild Tiger Lilys, Wild Water Lilies, Indian Paint Brushes, all kinds of Wild Daisies...............it was about 28 to 30 here today...........Fred

I remember the lady slippers well. Pretty, and a real unusual scent if you sliced off a stem. The crocus would push up through the last of the snow, and the sun's heat would warm the little dark circle of dirt where it pushed through, which melted a bigger circle and gave the crocus plenty of fresh water. Nice memories.

I think you guys been up there in the cold to long! It's called hypothermia , or something, affects the way you guys think ! Thinking anything above zero is warm !....................Sun came out today, after about a week, snow and ice finally melting, warmer, but STILL chilly....40's.............. just kiddin' , windy but feels good for a change !

It was sunny and 49 here yesterday. The wife and I took the 41 coupe out for a short drive. It's the first time I've had it out since November. Looks like the nice weather is finally starting to get here. Lee

My 1946 4 door has been chomping at the bit to get out. The snow should be gone here by the end of the week with some rain expected to wash the salt and sand away. I've been getting her ready for a nice drive down to Roswell NM the first weekend in April. Cleaned up the oil breather cap last week and re-painted yesterday afternoon. Air cleaner getting same treatment this week. She's soaking in an organic solvent right now. I need to empty out the oil bath and rinse out any accumulated sand and grit.

I have a spare back-up light that's been calling my name to get installed too. I'm planning on turning my back-up lights into supplemental turn signals. With amber bulbs installed, it will be hard to ignore them. I've got a set of Visibolts that will also be going on the rear once I test them to be sure they will work w/ 6v. Lots to do, but I still have one month.
