RobertKB Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 I love this thread. It's like the Energizer bunny...it keeps going and going and going!! Let's get it onto page 5 so we don't have to scroll down so far. This has to be the longest thread the old or new board ever saw!! Quote
knighthawk Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 I'm familiar with your building specs, as I started my repair/remodeling in Minn @ Wisc. After moving to Texas, I built the same way, they said they had never seen so much material put in a building before. Some of these guys were from the gulf coast, and used to 2x2's with tin for roofs. There was one guy that put his sewer in at night, so no one could see how he was doing it !! I guess it's kinda like car/ body work, you get back what you put in it !......................supposed to be the 40's today and tommorrow, certainly not there yet, than cooling off again!...............stay warm Quote
knighthawk Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 I think it almost hit 60 degrees yesterday ! Must have been one of those ''Texas Draws '' ! Only about 30 today and very windy ! We did get most of the ice melted off the roofs , ground is still about 50% covered with ice yet .......... Hey guys.......... I found this 1940 penny in good shape, ( other than being black ) in the '48 Dodge. What would it be worth ? ........I can mention it here on this weather thread , cause if it's worth a fortune, I can have a winter home in the carribean (?) Quote
PatS.... Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 I think you could easily double or triple your money on the penny Don't clean it though, you lose the patina and decrease it's value significantly. Quote
RobertKB Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 I'll trade ya a 1940 Canadian penny just for fun. Pretty sure I got one but I would have to check to make certain. Quote
knighthawk Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 I guess I was hoping for a little more than that................. Quote
RobertKB Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 You're right. With the exchange rate it wouldn't be worth it. LOL. Hey, my penny is a war time penny though! Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Here a Joke for all of you guys up in the cold country. Dennis:D Winter Blonde As a trucker stops for a red light, a blonde catches up. She jumps out of her car, runs up to his truck, and knocks on the door. The trucker lowers the window, and she says, "Hi, my name is Heather and you are losing some of your load." The trucker ignores her and proceeds down the street. When the truck stops for another red light, the girl catches up again. She jumps out of her car, runs up and knocks on the door. Again, the trucker lowers the window. As if they've never spoken, the blonde says brightly, "Hi my name is Heather, and you are losing some of your load!" Shaking his head, the trucker ignores her again and continues down the street. At the third red light, the same thing happens again. All out of breath, the blonde gets out of her car, runs up and knocks on the truck door. The trucker rolls down the window. Again she says "Hi, my name is Heather, and you are losing some of your load!" When the light turns green the trucker revs up and races to the next light. When he stops this time, he hurriedly gets out of the truck, and runs back to the blonde. He knocks on her window, and after she lowers it, he says, "Hi, my name is Kevin, it's winter in Wisconsin and I'm driving the SALT TRUCK!" Stay Warm Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 12, 2007 Author Report Posted February 12, 2007 Hi Dennis, great joke, how's this the one pic is yesterday when it was about -2 f, and the temp pic is what it's like here this morning. The cold snap is not due to break until thursday or friday, that means we have had 3 weeks of sub zero weather, fridays high is predicted to be about 28 f. We really don't get spring here until about the 2nd week of April and no real summer weather till May. The odd time it will get 70 and 80s in April and May, but summer is really from June to Sept here, last frost is around May 15, and the first fall frost is around Sept 30.Interesting enough it was a mild winter until 3 weeks ago by our standards, they were drilling test holes where I work, the drillers said there was only 8 inches of frost under the snow in the ground, not bad considering how cold it gets here, were at least 400 miles south of where the permafrost stays in the ground year round, enough weather blather from me, all the best, I know if I was in Cal, I would have a lot more done on my car by now......................Fred Quote
knighthawk Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 your weather facts remind me of living in Wisconsin during the 70's, below zero, and frozen water and sewer pipes !0 Mid 70's we had the sewer pipe freeze up two years in row ! Finally dug it up and covered it with insulation and tar paper ! Surprised to hear the frost is omly a few inches deep, must have gotten some snow cover pretty early. Usually frost depth , this time of year, would be measured in feet ! Speaking of frost..... the depth for frost footings, (construction ) must be about 4 feet there ! Seems to me Minnasota and Wisconsin it was around 30 (?) inches. Texas had none at all, Here in Kansas It's about 12 or18'' including the sloped backfill....................Was 35 degrees last nite ! now rain and cooling off again ... Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 12, 2007 Author Report Posted February 12, 2007 Larry, where vehicles were driving, or there is no snow coverage or in wide open spaces there would or could be frost 3 to 4 feet deep. Touch wood I have not had a problem with the well, septic field or anything else for that matter. Building codes are strict here and take into consideration the environment. We do get colder than Wisconsin, but it's the same as Minn or ND. But once it's at 0 being 10 or 20 below isn't much different. Inside of the City Of Winnipeg pop 750000, there is enough heat from buildings and cars that it's always quite a bit warmer than where I live or the outskirts of the city. Our weather would be the same as Grand Forks or Fargo ND, even they are more severe at times. Last spring when the snow melted, and there was a lot and the winter was very mild, we had next to no frost in locations on my yard, as I was digging holes in different locations........Fred Quote
RobertKB Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Fred, interesting you say that it will warm up by Friday and then you will have had three weeks of really cold weather. We have had the same in Lethbridge AB. I usually find that a proper cold spell lasts about three weeks and this is the first proper one we have had here in about five years. Looking forward to warmer weather so I can get my '69 Ford (ouch) Falcon over to my garage to work on the brakes and get some work done on the steering. My wife bought the car new before I knew her. Haven't driven it in about 3 years and am looking forward to getting it back on the road. Right now it is in cold storage. It is all original and goes like a bat outta hell as it has a first year 302 in it. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 We did get a decent snow covering before the cold snap, so our frost in only a few inched deep. Under roadways or other open areas it would be much deeper. I remember only a couple winters back we had a similar cold snap with almost no snow throughout the state. There were several reported cases of septic systems freezing up in central to northern Wisconsin. Some area reported frost up to 6 to 8 feet deep that winter. Imagine going until spring with a frozen sewer system Quote
knighthawk Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 Well guys, I know where your cold weather went ! We had a nice ''Texas draw'' for a couple days. It just got pushed out by a "Norther'' . It's about 25 right now with some rain and sleet, and a 4omph wing from the North, goin down tonite and tommorrow, close to 0 wind chill !!!!!!! Quote
1just4don Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 got dumped on with big piles of snow. Winds piled up the meager 4" of snow. Bright sunshine for first time in long while, previous days on end of gray gloom. It is only minus 15 now wind chill cause the winds went down some. Tonight supposed to be minus 15 real time and a balmy 4 tommorrow. Can YOU Canuucks shut that darn feezer door tight??? Tired of you sharing so much!!! I am inside anyway, for now,, trying to raise some funds for a poor disabled lady in Arizona. She is homebound due to her power wheel chair is broken and needs a new controller,,,costs like 4-6 hundred bucks,,, of which she cant afford now,,, cause she gets about $500 total monthly income,,,paid the monthly utilities and bought $50 worht of groceries and has 40 bucks for everything else for the month(Medicine NOT included) Wish I knew somebody that could throw 10 or 20 bucks in a kitty for her... She is always so positive even in her youth and pain. It really sucks to be disabled and alone,,,no,,,very little income!! I cant see how she does it,,,I guess sometimes friends helped fill prescriptions for her,,,just to get by!! But MOST times she has to go without even the meds that help her!! never met the lady, always inspired by her tho!! Quote
vanbuskirk Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 Strangest snow ever. We were on the freeze line. Warm air over 22 degree ground temperature caused an unusual result. 50 miles south, Bloomington received freezing rain. 4000 people with no electricity because of broken lines. In Indianapolis, we received 8", including 4" of sleet. A cup with 5.5" of sleet melted to 3" of water. Very heavy shoveling. North of us, they got 12-17" of snow. Not the Blizzard of 1978, but very unusual. Bob Quote
knighthawk Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 that's like what we had here in Kansas couple weeks ago. Tulsa Oklahoma , about 100 miles south of us got the freezing rain , 1000's of power lines down, we got the freezing rain, about 3'', and not the downed power lines, and just North and west of us, all they got was the snow !...........sure is cold today,,,,,teens and 20's for next couple days,, ( it's cold for me anyway!!!) Quote
Guest usedmind Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 They are calling it the blizzard of 2007 here on the news. Purdue has been completely shut down for only like the second time in 12 years. We officially got like 17 inches and no one knew what to do, well sledding seems to be a very good option. Im just happy my Thermodynamics exam got cancelled. Well now I have to go dig my car out of a snowdrift. Quote
Guest usedmind Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 A few Pics I took after the "Blizzard" My poor snow covered car. Im glad to see the wind took alot off of it! The Engineering mall. Purdue was going to open but Lafayette told them they couldnt. I was impressed that they had alot of campus cleared, but too bad none of the roads to purdue were clear. I bet he is gonna be there a bit longer than 2hours. Sadly he will prolly still get a ticket. Stay warm! Quote
knighthawk Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 It's been kinda cold here in Kansas lately, 0 degrees wind chill, the last couple days !! I think one more day and it''ll be warmer. Strong south west wind today and still ''0'' chill !! Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 16, 2007 Author Report Posted February 16, 2007 Larry, come to Manitoba, its 30 here at my place today as I write this.HeHeHe Quote
knighthawk Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 we got a 40 mph wind today, like Isaid , out of the south, they say it'll switch to out of the north tonight or tommorrow. If this crap don't qiut pretty soon, I just may come to Canada for a ''spring break''!!! Quote
RobertKB Posted February 18, 2007 Report Posted February 18, 2007 You are all welcome to come up here for spring break. Weather is supposed to be 40-50F for the next week or so. It's not California and we don't have an ocean in Alberta but the the wind is blowin', the sun is showin', and the '48 D25 will soon be goin'. Quote
knighthawk Posted February 19, 2007 Report Posted February 19, 2007 it's in the 50's today, supposed to hit 60 by Wednesday. I don't know how even that will feel warm, with this darn North wind blowing ! Keep the invite open !!!............I guess the wind today is out of the south, it's so darn strong I guess I can't tell where it's comming from!!! Quote
