Finishing up work on the trunk area of my '39 Dodge and I need a trunk mat! It came with a 70's era vinyl plaid mat that was cracked and all-around shot to hell.

What was the stock trunk mat? Rubber or some kind of wool material?

Does anyone sell sizeable rubber matting? I can only find repro 60s'-70's trunk mats online. I dont expect anyone to be selling exact 39 dodge cutouts, but if there is something I can get and cut myself that would be something.

Thoughts?

I think the trunk mat was probably rubber, my 37 Plymouth coupe had a rubber trunk mat. Moving up a few years to 1941 and My Chrysler (sedan) had a burlap type material with bound edges. Don't know where to find replacement but I need some myself.

I found these folks on eBay when they were only selling the felt mat for my 40 Plymouth. I asked if they could make one out of rubber with bound edges and they did for not much more than the felt one. They are selling the rubber one now. I also asked if they could make other years for me and they said yes, just send them a paper pattern.

The only thing is that they won't sell them to you....I checked with them already. They want you to bid on them. I'm trying to get them to show me what the rubber mat looks like, which they say is on the auction, but I don't see it. Just the fabric ones.

If you scroll down past the felt one,on the auction I posted, you will see a rubber one for the 40-41 with bound edges. It should look like that one only shaped differently for your 47. I got the impression they aimed to please ,so that they could add more mats to their inventory. They made one out of rubber right away and now have added it to their site. I'm going to have them make a rubber mat for my 38 and 42 coupes as soon as I get off my posterior and send them pattern I will make out of heavy paper.

Did they make it for you then sell it to you or did they tell you they would make it then put it on Ebay where you would have to bid on it. This is what they are telling me. They have it posted not to contact them about selling outside of the auction. I mean...what's the big deal? Just name a price and leave it at that. These guys think they are selling gold or something and everyone and their mother will bid on it...that's the impression I get.

Okay...I saw the rubber mat, but I thought it was a a pic of an old one. It looks used and dirty. It'd be good to see a closer pic, like in the other photos, of the pattern of the rubber.

I have an original rubber mat in my '48 Dodge D25 Club Coupe and it does not look at all like the black mat they are selling. The weather was so nice I took the old girl out for a run and got a picture of the trunk material. It is ribbed and more like the floor mat in the front of the car. It is also different on the driver's side than the one for sale on ebay as it runs right to the actual inner fender well and is not just flat like the one for sale on ebay. Also note that it goes over the hump for the rear axle and runs up to the cardboard lining on the back seat. Mine needs some repair, which I plan on doing, but it gives a good idea of what the original looks like. I think if you can find a decent piece of ribbed rubber matting you could cut yourself one for a lot less money than the one for sale on ebay.

A fellow named Sal Salerno has some type mats, I think. Haven't heard

his name tossed out here in a while. Maybe someone can add a bit to

this info.

Robert...thanks for posting that. I always wanted to know what the entire mat looked like. When I got mine, it was quicly falling a part from being old and brittle. I could tell that it at one time matched the mat in the front. I could make one from some rubber matting they have at Home Depot, but I don't think I could make it go up on the side like it shows in your pic.

Bob...whne I was getting the info about the front mat from Sal, he told me he had no trunk mats. If anyone is looking for front mats for the P15...Sal's the guy to get them from. It's A-1 quality and fits great. It's exactly like the original and on that note...is worth the money.

Well, I decided to just have my upholstry guy make me a trunk mat from

the same carpet used on the floors. Is not correct for a '47 Plymouth,

I know, but suits me. Made the trunk panels from cardboard bought at

Hobby Lobby, and vinyl material the same as the door panels....with some

cotton batting between cardboard & material.

The carpet, although not original, looks better than the n-o-s rubber

mat I did have that was rather brittle and began cracking not too long

after being installed.

I traded several emails with someone from First Class Parts (the guys selling on ebay.) They don't have any ply or dodge patters for 39's (I'm not shocked), but if I send them a pattern they can make me a rubber one.. so I'm in business. Does anyone know if the mat pattern RobertKB posted above is the same pattern that would have been in my '39? I honestly dont care too much about an exact pattern match, but if I have the chance, I'll take it.

Does anyone know if the mat should have a cutout for my spare tire? in the '39 there is no floor cutout, it just sits broad and upright at the back rear of the trunk. Also, would the trunk mat flow onto the step down area at the trunk opening? Its not very big and is probably where the jack and other trunk equip were stored.

47Heaven... I also saw the warning on their auctions about not contacting them... but that was in regards to parts for sale on ebay... since they did not list 39 Dodge anywhere on their auctions, or their separate list of available parts, I figured it didn't apply, and I was right... they didnt give me any problems. They are just complaining about people letting auctions end with no bids, so they can contact them afterward and try and haggle the price to get a better deal.

I want a rubber mat for my pickup but have nothing left of an original for a pattern. Did they mention anything about bulk rubber mat

in their emails?

Commercial cleaning supply houses usually sell various rubber mats for commercial buildings. You can usually buy it by the foot. Check with your local supply houses. Pick a pattern and tell them how many feet you want. Then cut it to fit.

http://www.rubbercal.com/Corrugated_Fine_Rib.html Here is a company thay will sell peices. I didn't look very long for better prices but this might work. If someone really wanted get adventuresome he could cut and join peices to conform to non flat surfaces. You could use the ribbed material for the majority and smooth elsewhere. I don't know how one would join it. Weld, heat? Glues? I have a felt mat in my trunk but the rubber would be better. Eric.

That stuff looks great. Also the truck has a flat floor so no need to worry about humps. Just has to go up one angle as it gets towards the firewall.
