Young Ed Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Just dug out some spare parts to find a fuel guage for Bigred48 (andy right?) anyway its the normal piece with an extra board and connections on the back. Anyone know whats up with all this? Old school 12v conversion maybe? Quote
bigred48 Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 could you post a picture? sounds strange, thanks abunch for looking. Andy Quote
Young Ed Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Oops meant to have pics in the original post! Quote
bigred48 Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 That looks pretty similar to what is on the car now. But i can't be sure because I am 100 miles from my car. Quote
bob westphal Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 All of the P-15 fuel gauges I've seen have only two terminals. I've never seen any thing like what you have! Looks like you have a capacator hooked in there for whatever purpose I can't imagine. Quote
Normspeed Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 My 53 Plymouth has a similar deal on the fuel gauge. It's a little fiber board. I have no idea why it's there other than to make it even more difficult to change out the gauge. It looks original, and the car is still 6 volt so it's not a voltage drop. Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 I have one of these gauges from my 47 Chrysler partscar. The gauges have points, so the capicitor, could be installed to deal with arc at the points in the gauge, just my guess however.............Fred Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 All P15's had thermostatic type fuel guage according to the repair manual and schematics. Therefore all guages has three studs for connections and the sender at the tank has two stud connection. (2 wire system) Plymouth did go to one wire in 1949 (second series) Granted that with a model change with the 1st series 49 there could be a gray area in which a P15 got the single wire electro-magnetic guage. Bob, is your car a 1st series 49? Can we get our bonified 1st series owners to maybe report back with the style guage they have? Quote
Young Ed Posted January 9, 2008 Author Report Posted January 9, 2008 Tim I don't have a 49 but my 48 was built in Nov 48 during the final weeks of the 48 model run. I believe after Dec 1 they are considered 49s. My car still has the 2 wire sender system. Also if you look between the boards on the back of the guage I pictured it looks like the other guages I have seen with an extra board added on. But the more I study it the more it looks like a factory added piece. Quote
