Robin (UK) Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 Bob, I've been watching the bidding on that Fire Extinguisher. Not to buy it - just to see the end price. In the meantime, another has been listed, with a Buy It Now price of $1450 - that one has the original bracket. Picture attached. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 Maybe I should put my Air O Flater extinguisher on ebay for that kind of money. After all, mine does double duty. It's not only a fire extinguisher, but also a tire inflater. Also have the original mounting bracket and even extra new decals for it. Just kidding, I'll hang onto mine. Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted December 8, 2007 Author Report Posted December 8, 2007 The sale of Neil's MoPar fire extginguisher has ended. The winning bid was $1679. Quote
47heaven Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 ...this will do me fine. $15.00 at Walmart...can't beat it. Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 Interesting that the buy it now price on the other one listed has now increased by two bills and there is a pending offer by the same bidder who won the one that sold. It must cost a lot more to ship stuff from Ohio than it does to ship stuff from out west. Flat rate shipping for this fire extinguisher from Ohio costs $32.59 and from the old Plymouth Cafe it cost $9.80 Quote

Flat rate shipping for this fire extinguisher from Ohio costs $32.59 and from the old Plumouth Cafe it cost $9.80 Nothing strange about the higher shipping cost for a fire extinguisher. It probably just means the one who is charging $32.59 is following DOT shipping regulations. My guess is Neil may be charging regular shipping rates. If he tells UPS or FedEx whats in the package he's shipping he could be hit with a higher shipping rate too. That's because a pressurized container is considered hazardous. Hazardous shipments get an extra $20 tacked onto the regular rates. So, looks like one seller did his homework and the other didn't. It's also possible the other guy didn't do his homework too. That's because if the pressurized container is under a certain weight, it can go Consumer Commodity, ORM-D. ORM-D carry regular shipping rates under Consumer Commodity. You'd have to check the UPS or FedEx website hazardous shipping regulations to see if it could under Consumer Commodity and save the hazardous rate cost. Quote

"In accordance with eBay and USPS rules this item is emptied of its original contents and will be shipped as empty" Quote

"In accordance with eBay and USPS rules this item is emptied of its original contents and will be shipped as empty" Because of the container itself, it still could be classified hazardous under DOT regs. Like I mentioned, you'd have to check. My brother in law has sold and installed fire equipment for years. They have to treat the empties as hazardous too when they go pick them up. The same pertains to a gas cylinder from your gas grill and propane torch cylinders. Those are also considered hazardous even when empty if you check with the local authorities. That's why you aren't supposed to throw them in the garbage can. Quote

Norm's Coupe Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 I'll bet a lot of people have these old fire extinguishers laying around someplace. They really aren't all that rare. I've been going to several swap meets a year since about 1990. At least three local major ones. I don't think I've missed seeing at least a couple of them at all those major swap meets. Don't remember the prices. Actually never ask, but the ones that did have a price tag on them in plain sight were usually only about $10 to $20. That said, they were generic ones like Tim and I have. Now, a Mopar or other car make labeled one would probably be a little more, but wouldn't be that much more. My brother in law gave me mine some years ago. Think he has a few more laying around too. Some people have all the luck finding and getting neat stuff cheap or for free. He has an old 20's gas pump sitting out in the yard that he restored. His cost for the pump itself, free, some guy gave it to him years ago. Also has a nice tire flater sitting next to his garage. It was working when he got it. All he did was paint it again. His cost, free. Picked it up at a gas station that was going out of business. He also picked up an oil pump with the tank from another gas station going out of business. Got it for the free price too. Just a couple of years ago he picked up several industrial grade tool cabinets and carts from a company tool & die shop that was shutting down. Filled up half his garage. His cost for them all. Again, free. I have one of those tool cabinets in my garage. He kept what he wanted, gave me first pick of any or all that was left afterward and he gave what I didn't want to other friends. I don't think a 6 month period goes by that he doesn't find something neat like this stuff for free and brings it home. Quote
