westaus29 Posted September 13, 2023 Report Posted September 13, 2023 The large left terminal is connected to the starter coils and is insulated from the starter body by insulating washers. The other end of the starter coils is connected to earth inside the starter body, and this completes the starter circuit. Quote

This will prevent any grounding and even if the relay is working the starter will not. They need cleaning to bright metal including the threads. Now if these are indeed painted then what does the area where the starter meets the engine look like? Is that painted too? If so clean the paint off and remove any rust that might be on the engine in this area. Quote
SteveR Posted September 13, 2023 Report Posted September 13, 2023 (edited) If you get a 6vdc reading on the Neg to ground next place your meter on the Neg and either Pos terminals you should get 6vdc. If not then your ground is no good. The ground will be through where the starter meets the engine. So if you set your meter to ohms you should get a closed circuit from the 'Pos nut' to the motor or the Pos (+) terminal on the Battery Edited September 13, 2023 by SteveR Quote
johnjnr Posted September 22, 2023 Author Report Posted September 22, 2023 Thanks everyone that has posted info over the last week or so and apologies for not replying to any sooner, ive been on my summer hols! greg g Posted September 23, 2023 Report Posted September 23, 2023 Check the main ground cable. If the starter was painted during its servicing, remove it and assure paint is removed from the mounting points. With your meter compare voltage across the battery terminals on fully charged battery. Now check the voltage from the negative terminal to a head bolt. If the voltage is lower at the headbolt is lower than the reading between the battery terminals your ground cable is suspect. Quote
