CKHughes Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 I just picked up my wheels with gloss black powder coating. They look awesome. So good in fact, I am contemplating having the box done in gloss black powder coat. Has anyone tried that? Seems like it would be do-able, no?? thx, Chris Quote
Thunder II Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 All you need is a huge oven.LOL!!! Quote
pflaming Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 If you disassemble the box, which you would want to do, then most any 'coater' will have an oven large enough. The side panels on many packaging machines are larger than the side panels on the box. You might as well do the fenders also, they will take the biggest beating. Remember you can powder coat with a clear coat also, so one could powder coat on a patina surface. Also remember that powder coating is baked into the metal which means that pits and scratches will show, so prepare, prepare, prepare. Good luck! Quote
Reg Evans Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 Can you powder coat over bondo? I always assumed you couldn't. Quote
Young Ed Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 You cannot Reg. However you can powder coat over that 3m panel bond stuff that they use to glue sheet metal together. I wonder if that stuff can be worked to a smooth finish like bondo? Quote
Thunder II Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 I've heard that you can powder coat over JB Weld. It holds up to the heat process, where Bondo wont. I've never tried it though, so ask your Powder people. Quote
48Dodger Posted November 17, 2007 Report Posted November 17, 2007 Bondo doesn't hold up to 400 deg of heat. Eastwood sells Lab Metal, but most use JB weld cuz its easier to work with. But it sounds like a lot of suface repair and prep that would make it a pricey deal to powder coat. I'd be interested to hear if you try it. Done right, I bet it would look awesome. 48D Quote
CKHughes Posted November 17, 2007 Author Report Posted November 17, 2007 Thanks for the great ideas. The imperfections on the wheels seen under the powder coating do not bother me at all. In fact, I kind of like the idea of the "patina" finish you refer to. Here comes an opinion I could buy an SSR if I wanted it all to look new. Fortunately, I find no bondo as the box is already stripped down. If there is something small, I will go the JB weld route. Now comes the the tricky part: calling back the coater to see what $$ he would need to do it. I will post my results. Thanks again!! Chris Quote
IanT_Qld Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Here comes an opinion I could buy an SSR if I wanted it all to look new. I like this theory, might fit with the rat-rod skool. I'm currently pondering preserving 52 years of a trucks life or restoring. (2c worth) Quote
Big50Dodge Posted November 21, 2007 Report Posted November 21, 2007 I thought about having my wheels powder coated - word was that it would chip easier. Went with paint. I'd be interested in know if the wheels chip when installing tires, in the first few hundred miles. I can still strip off the paint and go with powder. Quote
