Hi guys as I said I a previous thread I've just got this car back on the road after a rebuild and has being going well apart from a leaking rear main seal  . I had notice it smelt rich sometimes and I have a black spot on my garage wall from start ups so decided to pull plugs to have a look to see what they show . The pictures are of plugs after a 20 kilometer drive so a nice hot engine . But these plugs to my surprise are very white ! Is it running too lean or am I just bring paranoid ?

Assuming those plugs have been in since the rebuild, and not for only that 20K jaunt, there are no issues there, nice and clean.  If only for that 20K, that's not much of a litmus test, but they still look really good.  Personally, I would be biff and happy if the plugs in my old cars looked like that.  An occasional burp of the car smelling like its running rich isn't really a problem (chalk it up as "character"), extended periods could use some looking into, but may just be that the choke is applying itself when you don't expect it.  Meaning it's probably a choke issue, and not a carburetor or ignition issue.  Our D24 does the soot blow-out, too, but I've also got known blow-by issues in the engine.

If you use the choke to start and it only smells rich during that time then it's fine. The black on the floor probably due to the same.  After all, enrichening the mixture is the job of the choke.

You haven't told us what plugs you are running but if one of the recommended plugs you are fine. It'll take a lot more than 20 kilometers to get a valid plug reading.

The car has done 300 miles since rebuild on those plugs . I ment to say I'd just done a 20 kilometer drive that day before I pulled the plugs . As for choke it's not connected the mechanism that bolts to the manifold was missing when I got the car . I never bothered finding one as a couple if pumps on accelerator and then holding it down a bit it starts everytime . Has NGK BR6S plugs in it
