How Do I Delete The Foot Starter On My 52 B3B Truck

Good morning -- I would like to delete the foot starter pedal system and change to a starter button on the dash.

I had a 47 years ago that a previous owner had converted, but I not sure how that was achieved.

One of my future projects will be to convert the truck to 12 volt, which will not require a different starter.

 

Ideas and advice will be greatly appreciated!

You'll need to get a starter from a Dodge or Plymouth of that same era. They use the push button start system. Then you'll need to add a start solenoid/relay in the engine bay to control the starter from the button that you install in the dash.

I did what Merle explained, would never return to the foot pedal. It is still in the truck, just for safekeeping.

Why not? Not being confrontational, it's your truck do with it what you want it's none of my business, but am curious to the advantage.

For myself, the stomp starter is part of the 'fun', of driving one of these old trucks. (along with vapour lock, having to double clutch when down shifting, vacuum wipers that don't work when going up hill, parallel parking  with armstrong steering, etc. . . )

For small people the size and layout probably works fine.

The pedal space for me is tight, and shifting is difficult.

Hitting the starter pedal while moving can cost you a starter and even a ring gear.

I remember a Dodge truck when I was a teenager. To get it started you had to stomp that post  and I hated that, so I immediately changed. I also put in a car starter which was easier to install and remove and it required a push button start.  All in all, the push button was just a nice convenience which I enjoyed.

Pushing down the starter pedal is  easier than the clutch pedal...

Try a Chevy or GMC stomp pedal of the same era...much harder to operate than the Dodge.

I'm fortunate I can still push the stomp starter pedal on my 413 six in my DT easy enough.

   Any one of these starters from 46-55 will work for you. Both these solenoids are stamped 6v, despite what the internet listings say, a Standard SS566 is 12v. Mount the button left of the steering wheel and it allows you to work the choke and throttle with your right hand. The diagram is for a P15, but how you get power to the button is up to you. Depending on where you mount the solenoid, use the proper battery cables as long as it’s still 6 volt. There are some ideas and advice, now will you post some pictures of your truck, as long as you’re a new member.  Rick D.
