40desoto Posted December 30, 2022 Report Posted December 30, 2022 Im thinking of installing a rack and pinion steering system on my 1940 Desoto. From what I've researched it appears that most front end suspension on Plymouths, Dodge, Chrysler cars from the 40's are similar. Wondering if anyone has done this on a 40 using the manual (non-power) kit. and keeping the flat six in the car. One negative that I've researched is that the turning radius may be limited with the R&P install. Quote
Sniper Posted December 31, 2022 Report Posted December 31, 2022 This topic covers the swap of a power Cavalier rack, same issues as a manual one, same solutions Quote
40desoto Posted December 31, 2022 Author Report Posted December 31, 2022 Thank You Sniper, wondering if anyone has done the non-power one and how they liked it? specifically the limited turning radius based on what I read. Quote
Sniper Posted December 31, 2022 Report Posted December 31, 2022 Scott made new steering arms to address the limited turning radius. Now as for the effort involved, I dunno. I've also seen others make an adapter plate that moves the stock steering arm one hole forward, towards the front bumper. Ill see if I can find that It's in the thread I already linked, lol. Quote
James_Douglas Posted December 31, 2022 Report Posted December 31, 2022 If a car is converted to 12 volts, I would look into the EPAS performance electric power assist and keep the thing more stock... James Quote
