jd52cranbrook Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 What a awesome sound. Just had that done to my car. I was running the split manifolds into one pipe and muffler with a stinger exhaust out the center of the car for about a year since I put the dual set up on the car. Found the smithy's, and a good pipe bender. Car sounded so good I picked up my lady friend and drove through Niles Canyon here about 11 pm..... The rapping sound bouncing off the hills,, I was 16 again, but this time I owned the car I was riding in.... Quote
teardrop puller Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I too have duels with the smitties and love the sound. It is just one of the many fun things about driving our cars. kai Quote
Normspeed Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Sounds like you had a great ride. Sure puts a smile on your face, doesn't it?. Quote
BeBop138 Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 There is nothing like a good set of pipes---such a sweet sound:D I have used Porter steel pack mufflers for years on all my cars--V8`s and six bangers. I do belive they sound better than Smithy`s---just my opinon. They sound so nice when you hit that sweet spot of rpm`s when your cruising---could listen all day..........Happy Trails Quote
Normspeed Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I have a different exhaust setup, and the sweet spot is low rpms, accelerating under a load like the first part of high gear. I leave the radio off when I'm cruising around town, just to enjoy that sound. Quote
hkestes41 Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I will be doing my exhaust before long and will be using cast headers from Langdon's. What diameter tubing is everyone using? Quote
teardrop puller Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I have 2" front to back. kai Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I only have a single exhaust with the Smitty muffler. However, I've never had a better sounding car than the 57 Ford I had back in the 60's. That thing would really sing and put out the blurps when you let off the pedal. Had a 63 Police Interceptor engine under the hood with dual Cherry Bomb glass packs. It would roll pretty good too. :D Quote
martybose Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I have 2" front to back.kai Likewise on mine; 2" individual from the headers to the tailpipe, no crossover. Marty Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 I have a different exhaust setup, and the sweet spot is low rpms, accelerating under a load like the first part of high gear. I leave the radio off when I'm cruising around town, just to enjoy that sound. Who needs a radio when the car sounds beat any thing that can be broadcast:cool: Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 I also have a single Smithy muffler, but no tail pipe yet.On the highway, with no door panels or headliner, it gets crazy loud, will a tail pipe help this or will it tone it down a bit. I like the sound, but around 45 to 50 mph it gets loud.............Fred Quote
Guest rockabillybassman Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Yes, a tailpipe will bring it down considerably. So will upholstery. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Mine had a tail pipe long before I put the door panels, carpet and headliner in. Was loud before the interior went in even with a tail pipe. Quote
Brendan D25 Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 I was 16 again, but this time I owned the car I was riding in.... So, are you telling us you were a car thief when you were 16? :D Sorry,I couldn't resist. Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 What I will do this winter is install carpet and underpadding and and maybe make door panels on those cold winter nights, but carpet and padding should lessen the noise a lot. Quote
pflaming Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Reading about the mufflers caused me to recall when I put smittys on my dad's 56 Ford V-8 without his knowledge. The over drive was out so he went to North Platte, NE to get the OD fixed. A viaduct was enroute and when he came off the viaduct he woke up half of the town. He told the garage to check out the loud exhaust while they were fixing the OD. When he was told what was under there, he was not a happy camper. I lost my smittys and was told never to fix anything on his cars again. I would have loved to hear those pipes coming off of that viaduct!!!!!! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 You can get a small taste of Don Coatneys duals in this (pretty amateur) video I did last summer. Well, it was fun riding around in the car anyway. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v96/BobT3/Nashville%20GoodGuys%20Show%20June%2006/?action=view¤t=100_2087.flv Quote
blueskies Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Here's a clip of my smithys, the day I had them put on... You can see that the rings had not seated yet:D. Only about 5 miles on the rebuild, idling around the block a few times and down to the muffler shop and back. Pete Quote
BloodyKnuckles Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 Smitty's and cut-outs...love them both. BloodyKnuckles Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted November 6, 2007 Author Report Posted November 6, 2007 Seen you post that before,, thats quite a piece of work. I cant see where you crossed over from the manifold to the other side? I was thinking of lake pipes but with my car already lowered I am banging the oil pan as it is. Next on tap is a skid plate for it. Quote
