OUTFXD Posted May 9, 2022 Report Posted May 9, 2022 (edited) Working on the cooling system and spilled some coolant on the head witch flooded one of the little recesses the spark plugs sit in. When I finished I started her up to check for leaks and noticed that the water around that spark plug was bubbling (slightly). On closer examination it was coming from between the sparkplug and head. I tried to think back and I dont remember the spark plugs having washers when I installed them. I know spark plugs usually come with washers. Do our cars use crush washers or do they pre-date that particular technology? I am considering installing washers. Pros? Cons? Thanks in advance! Edited May 9, 2022 by OUTFXD Spellin Quote
OUTFXD Posted May 9, 2022 Author Report Posted May 9, 2022 Pulled a plug off and it did indeed have a washer on it, Put it back in and it looks like it isnt sitting flush. The threads look good. do the spark plugs just sit higher on our engines or is something different going on? Quote
OUTFXD Posted May 9, 2022 Author Report Posted May 9, 2022 By the way, as I was taught, I spun the spark plug in finger tight + 1/4 turn. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 9, 2022 Report Posted May 9, 2022 ODDS are that is a crusty rust scale at the bottom of the plug recess...DO clean this and blow it out before next removal of the plug..... 1 Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted May 9, 2022 Report Posted May 9, 2022 Spark plugs do have washers unless you install Evr-Dry spark plug covers. They have a metal part that takes the place of the washers. 1 Quote
desoto1939 Posted May 9, 2022 Report Posted May 9, 2022 According to my Autolite Manual if you remove a sparkplug you should also replace the copper or steel washer. These serve to make a good seal inthe head. Our old Mopar flaties mostly use a 14mm sparkplug with a 3/8 reach. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com 1 Quote
OUTFXD Posted May 9, 2022 Author Report Posted May 9, 2022 Wasnt in a hurry to clean up the head. I was going to take it in and have it milled for better compression, at THAT time I would have it media blasted and repainted. But if it is causing sealing issues in the spark plugs... I am thinking clean it and just primer around the spark plug holes. Thank you all for the advice! Quote
