Doug&Deb Posted February 11, 2022 Report Posted February 11, 2022 I have a flathead out of a 58 Dodge truck that I plan to rebuild for my 52 Coronet. Are there enough differences between 52 and 58 to justify buying a service manual for the 58 truck? I’ve never rebuilt an engine before so I’m not sure if the manual for the 52 will have the correct specs. Any ideas? Quote
kencombs Posted February 11, 2022 Report Posted February 11, 2022 Offhand, I can't think of any reason a newer manual would be needed. My Motor's manual covers up to 60, and all the specs for 40 something to 60 are the same in the engine section. I've only seen minor differences, like the coolant sensor hole in the head and compression ratio. Of course there are a lot of variances in the crank pulley, one piece, multipiece, wide pulley vs narrow, but all that is obvious. Quote
Doug&Deb Posted February 11, 2022 Author Report Posted February 11, 2022 Thanks. That’s what I thought. Just checking Quote
keithb7 Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 What size engine is the ‘58 Dodge truck? 23” long 230? Quote
Boody Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 Wouldn't the oil pan also be different? Front sump and rear sump? Quote
Doug&Deb Posted February 12, 2022 Author Report Posted February 12, 2022 The engine is a 230. It was in a 51 Coronet that is being rodded so all the components were changed to work in the car including the fluid coupling and M6 trans. I’m saying 58 truck based on the engine number. This is a project for me to learn how to rebuild an engine. I was concerned about the torque specs being different from 52 to 58 or any internal differences. Quote
keithb7 Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 You’re going to learn a ton rebuilding that engine. The experience you’ll gain, priceless. I recommend you try and do as much as you can yourself. For me the measuring and blueprinting that I did, was a big part of the process. Good luck. 1 Quote
Doug&Deb Posted February 12, 2022 Author Report Posted February 12, 2022 Thanks Keith! I plan on doing as much as I can. I’ll be watching your videos for help definitely. Quote
