Art Bailey
Hey All, Does anyone know if 12" drums and backing plates from a '51 Chrysler NY'er will fit on a '48 DeSoto Custom? What else besides the backing plates (I'm assuming) do I have to change? Related question, is there a noticeable gain going from an 11" brake drum to a 12"? Thanks, Art
Sniper
I know there is at least one member who advocates this swap, he'd probably know best. But I forget who it is, lol.

The size difference between 10 and 12 is pretty obvious, but I wonder if there's that much of a difference between 11 and 12?
James_Douglas
If you want the 12 inch brakes, just do get a 1946 yo 1948 Desoto Suburban/Limo or big Chrysler 8 rear-end and swap the while thing. James
Dodgeb4ya
The 51 NY'er drums front and rear use the larger bolt pattern wheels,hubs/bearings on the fronts, rear drums use a larger axle shaft. Any Chrysler "8" brake swap to the smaller six cars would be difficult. The front spindle support also uses the larger threaded pins and bushings. So a steering knuckle support swap won't work either. So no not an easy swap at all. Edited October 30, 2021 by Dodgeb4ya 1
Art Bailey
Thanks, guys. Sounds like I have to convince a friend that they want a '48 DeSoto parts car on their property as yard art if I want 12" brakes.

I would have to look and see if the rivet holes are in a different pattern...the bolt pattern would be an issue but one MAY be able to weld the old holes up and drill new ones for the smaller pattern... A backing plate can be welded and modified easy enough to fit if it clears the uprights... I would just change the front to discs and if one needed the 12 inch on the rear just swap and entire big 8 rearend. James
