chucky07 Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 trying to start my truck..thats been sitting for years...have done everything...clean gas..new fuel pump ... plugs..etc... I'm not too good with 1 bbl..carter carbs i guess...it floods gas out everywhere when i try to start it...i took off the top part of carb..but couldnt see how to adjust the float..is the gas suppose to be clear up to top? is there and adjustment for the float level... would appreicate anyone with more experience than me... I had it running for a few seconds..sounded pretty good..would like to keep it running though.. thanks kevin Quote
MBF Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 Sounds like the needle valve is stuck. If I remember correctly-this is in the front fitting where the gas line goes to the carb. If it is the one with the rubber seat-the seat may be shot and not allowing it to close off the flow of gas to the bowl. This may be the same type needle valve and seat assembly used on later slant 6 carbs with the single barrel carter on them. You may get lucky by just cleaning any crud thats on the body of the triangular portion of the valve, and cleaning out the seat. Good luck. Mike Quote
62rebelP23 Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 definitely the needle valve is sticking; i had the same problem with the 4v on my galaxie, got about a QUART of gasoline on top of the engine thank God no backfires. on the 4v it was easy to fix; cover the ports on top of the carb and pressure under the floats forces the valves to seat, temporarily at least. need to replace the needle valves to cure it completely. Reg Evans Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Look here at some exploded views of the carb. Sounds like your needle valve is missing or stuck open. http://dodgepilothouseclub.org/know/ph_parts/b_14.pdf Reg Quote
greg g Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 The float is adjusted by bending the part of the assembly that contacts the needle valve. remove the little silver metal clip that keeps float in its slot. pull up on the float assembly, then by bending the small tang forward with a needle nose pliers you will adjust it to close the needle sooner. chucky07 Posted October 15, 2007 Author Report Posted October 15, 2007 pulled the fitting off the carb..(where the gas line goes in)...and there was no needle vavle behind the fitting..that goes up against the float.(The diagram of the carb clearly shows this vavle)..i'm assuming its purpose is to shut off gas supply when it reaches the correct height.... Do they all have that needle valve? because the old man I bought the truck from said he parked it there..20 yrs ago...surely he didn't remove the needle valve? I'm very new to this..so forgive if i sound dumb..... I really wish i could just buy a new carb and bolt it on..but none of the auto parts places here even know what i'm talking about when i say 52 dodge truck.. Will a rebuild kit have the needle vavle in it? thanks kevin Quote
Young Ed Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Kevin that will be a standard rebuild kit item. They really aren't too complicated to rebuild. Pay attention to where the 2 BBs come out of. The small one goes under the accelerator pump and the bigger one is in a port right next to it. The other thing is keep your old gaskets until you put it back together. The kits typically have multiple ones that are close and you have to match them up with the proper ones for your specific carb. Quote
chucky07 Posted October 15, 2007 Author Report Posted October 15, 2007 thank you..for the info...it's much appreciated...I just ordered a rebuild kit..and will be my first time ..Hope it works..but I seem to have no choice as I can't order a new one..and nobody in my town will rebuild it.. Young Ed Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Feel free to ask more questions as they come along. These are pretty basic carbs. I can do one in my sleep now The other day I took mine apart to clean it out after work and had it back together and back on the car in time to drive to dinner Quote
