MarcDeSoto Posted December 27, 2020 Report Posted December 27, 2020 The gear oil in my 48 DeSoto differential is supposed to be 90W gear oil. O'Reilly's didn't have that, so I bought SAE 85W-140 gear oil. On the back of the bottle, it says this oil is good for manual transmissions, conventional differentials, rear axles, and steering gear boxes. I did not buy the synthetic gear oil, which costs more or the one for partial slip differentials. Did I pick the right oil for the differential of my 48? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 27, 2020 Report Posted December 27, 2020 GL5...you got the right stuff....when it says conventional axle....it is referring to the fact it does not have the additives for posi-trac...if and when you are in doubt.....refer to your book in the lubrication section...this is still very applicable today... Andydodge Posted December 27, 2020 Report Posted December 27, 2020 Hypoid 90W.........is all you need, which is some new fangled lingo is GL5...........andyd Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted December 27, 2020 Author Report Posted December 27, 2020 The bottle I got does say GL 5, but it is 85W - 140. The clerk said if I wanted the straight 90, he would have to see if he could order it. Is that necessary or is what I got OK? Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted December 27, 2020 Report Posted December 27, 2020 With 85-140 you got it covered... Good for the North Pole❄ Good for the Mojave Desert? Also dandy oil for a slightly worn gear set...You did fine. Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted December 27, 2020 Author Report Posted December 27, 2020 Thanks Dodge, I don't think I'll be at the North Pole, but the Mojave is almost in my backyard! Thanks and Happy New Year! 1 Quote
