Exhaust damper

Helllo. A new

" stupid" question from Sweden regarding my Dodge Kingswsy Custom 1950. On the exhaust mainfold there is a " thing" with a spring, see picture. What's the purpose and how should it be adjustet. I understand it close/open a damper inside mainfold to control heat up to the carburator.But the spring, is it a kind of bimetal, to react by heat? Best regard Timo

this is called a hear riser to control sending warm air up to the base of the carb during winter and very cold starting it prevents the base of the carb from icing up. the big item is the counter weight and the spring is what helps to put and release the tension on the flate plate that is installed betweenthe two halves of the manifold.

Turn the shaft as far as it will go clockwise. This position is shown in the picture allows exhaust to flow out.  The default position is fully anticlockwise to divert exhaust to the chamber in the intake manifold.  If you do not operate your vehicle in freezing temperatures, it not a concern to secure it turned fully clockwise.
