adam_knox Posted June 17, 2020 Report Posted June 17, 2020 Its been about 12 years since I've had my 1949 Chrysler Windsor (C-45). Just doing some check ups on it and noticed the rubber on the upper control arm is cracked and slightly dry. It still has some bounce to it. Is that a big deal? Should I tackle that, or is it as long as there material there we're good? Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted June 18, 2020 Report Posted June 18, 2020 Of course, the upper control arm rubber bumper takes a lot of abuse due to the nature of its job. I think you are OK, as long as you are not feeling any roughness in the ride. Quote
48ply1stcar Posted June 18, 2020 Report Posted June 18, 2020 One of mine looks like that after two years of use. I rebuilt my front end 3 years ago, of course I probably screw it up anyway. Quote
Andydodge Posted June 19, 2020 Report Posted June 19, 2020 By the way the suspension "hangs" down when the car is jacked up means that the upper rebound rubber gets compressed against the chassis and essentially squashed.........if it looks like that shown at normal ride height then its time to replace it.........at least thats my view.................andyd Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 19, 2020 Report Posted June 19, 2020 the rebound rubber is not to be in contact with the upper control arm EXCEPT when jacked and weight is off the wheel....long term storage in this condition will tend to distort the rubber...except for a poor look, if the rebound rubber is securely attached to the metal mounting vulcanized to the rubber, it is good to go....many, given there is space when working will for long term use wooden blocks to maintain a gap...
