BrandonBDenver Posted April 21, 2019 Report Posted April 21, 2019 (edited) Bought a '46 Plymouth Special Deluxe and have been slowly getting everything working properly. Hooked up the speedometer cable yesterday and it goes crazy (needle bounces all over). Does the cable need attention or is the gauge shot? Edited April 21, 2019 by BrandonBDenver Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 21, 2019 Report Posted April 21, 2019 could be a bad cable liner, dried lube in the cable or just improperly routed and binding and or could be that the speedometer head needs lubed or a combination of all and yes lastly even a bad speedo-head. Quote
BrandonBDenver Posted April 21, 2019 Author Report Posted April 21, 2019 Thank you! Figured as much. Oh well. It will keep me busy this week haha! Quote
thebeebe5 Posted April 21, 2019 Report Posted April 21, 2019 I just did mine last weekend. Pulled the cable out of the car. Removed the core. Washed both in a Safety Kleen parts washer. Dried them thoroughly and greased and reinstalled the core. Once installed my speedo needle was smooth as silk. It had been squeaking and bouncing the needle a bit. Easy and darned near free save some effort... ???? Quote
soth122003 Posted April 21, 2019 Report Posted April 21, 2019 Hey Brandon Welcome to the forum. In this pic look at the center piece. It is the speedo. At the center is a post looking piece pointing to 1'oclock. This is the lube point (using a lite weight oil 3in1, liquid wrench or so) in side is a felt wad which soaks up the oil and lubes the speedo. It just takes a few drops. Joe Lee 2 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 21, 2019 Report Posted April 21, 2019 try and find a lighter oil than 3-1, it will turn gunny over time....a good instrument oil of about 10W can be found even at wally world in the form of pneumatic tool oil......it is a better lube... Quote
pflaming Posted April 22, 2019 Report Posted April 22, 2019 (edited) Jay Lee. I just saved your picture to my electrical page. That shows wires, cipolors, etc, TKS. I will check that against my wiring. Tomorrow I'm double checking all electrical before I lift my dash into place. Edited April 22, 2019 by pflaming Quote
