1940 Chrysler Royal/Windsor? Rear End

Hi, I've been browsing the forums here and looking for some information on my car but haven't found exactly what I need. I'm looking to swap the rear end on my, what I believe to be a 1940 Chrysler Windsor or Royal, no easy way to tell that I know of.  Anyway, I'd like to know which rear end of a newer vehicle will fit it. Does anyone know? Here are some pics of the car if anyone knows what it is for sure.  It has a 350 in it with 400 parts so it doesn't run so great. Hope to get a new 350 in there some day. 4 spd auto, unsure of gear ratio in the rear but it doesn't do burn outs...hahah. Pic of the engine was during a master cyl replacement, that's why it's missing. The interior is def not original and the back seat looks as if it was added recently, it's not secure.

 

Anyway, the pedal is a little low and I've bled the heck out of the brakes so I'm guessing the cylinders in the drums are bad. Thinking of just replacing the whole thing to get discs in the rear but am not sure what would fit.

odds are the rear gear may have already been changed.....along with front suspension parts......perhaps a detailed picture of both will answer that question......it would be hard to advise on a gear till you know what you have in place now.....

Agree with this.  Since it won't do burnouts with a ' 350 with 400 parts' it probably has a much higher rear end ratio than original.   Even a sick 350 should turn the tires through a high 3/low 4 that most had.

I don't understand the whole "350 with 400 parts in it so it doesn't do burn outs" thing. I have 350 Rods in a 412 small block using special Keith Black 10 to 1 flat top pistons with ported and relieved 2:02 heads,roller rockers, and a 7 grand redline cam,and it will FLY.

 

If anything,the original rear end would be geared so low it would be hard to not spin the tires taking off. If your car is geared too high for a 350 w/auto,that ain't the original rear end.

 

As for the brakes,if you have to do them anyhow,do yourself a favor and go ahead and switch to front disc brakes and be done with it. Disc rears are ok,but not necessary in a street ride.

 

Do yourself another favor and buy everything brake related from the same brake source you get your rotors and calipers from is normally good advise,but since you already have a GM master cylinder and booster on your firewall,you can just buy a new mc from Napa or some other source THAT IS NOT SELLING CHINESE BRAKE PARTS.

 

While you are at it,replace ALL your brake lines with the new copper/steel brake lines,and replace all your rubber brake lines with new rubber brake lines. Cheap insurance.

 

Also a good idea to replace all your gas lines with the same copper/steel line you used on the brakes,but with a bigger ID. Replace all the rubber gas lines and fuel filters with new stuff rated to be ok to use with ethanol,too.
