JPP Posted March 11, 2018 Report Posted March 11, 2018 Hi, I need to haul two ~14’ kayaks in the back of my shortbed B2B. I was thinking of using 1” pipe 8’ long stuffed into bed tube on top of bed connecting the two pipes with crossmember and 90 degree elbows. When stuffed in they would be flush with tailgate and stick out of front of bed enough to use a pin to keep it from falling out. Then I would pull out 4’ and pin mid bed. I could the slide in kayaks and attach nose of kayak to extended pipe from underneath. I think it should work well, even good for lumber. Has anyone tried this? What am I missing? Thanks for your consideration. Quote
48Dodger Posted March 15, 2018 Report Posted March 15, 2018 Never tried this, but a thumbnail drawing would help me visualize what you're thinking. Sounds interesting. 48D Quote
JPP Posted April 19, 2018 Author Report Posted April 19, 2018 So I have made my rack. Here are the pictures. Works well. I have 1” pipe running length of the bed and pinned when closed. I the unpin it and pull out 4’ and I have another pin hole to keep it at that length, I have 3.5’ of counterlever so very stable. Sorry if the pictures don’t do it justice. When I go kayaking next time will shoot better picture. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 19, 2018 Report Posted April 19, 2018 when I hauled my canoe, and as it was tapered each end, I placed eye bolts the width of the canoe each end where it would lay on the supports, this kept it from moving back or forth and running my strap from side to side each end across the top of the canoe it would not lift either.... pflaming Posted April 19, 2018 Report Posted April 19, 2018 Wouldn't an "over the cab" rack, be a better balanced method and keep the Kayaks within the total space of the truck? Quote
JPP Posted April 19, 2018 Author Report Posted April 19, 2018 My kayaks are 14’ and we like to only have to lift them bed high. Fast on fast off. Works for us. Quote
