Young Ed Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Can't say I got quite as much done as Chet though. I did get the rest of my 2 heater parts repainted. They are almost done. The motors need to be reinstalled and the motor covers need the 2 red circles painted. I sprayed matte clear finish over the model 54 badge. Am I supposed to have a model 53 badge for the pass side? Also through some discussion on the pilot house forum I decided to take a look at getting real fastners for my door check straps. Someone had shown an ebay auction for a nos mopar fastner that screwed together and took the place of the rivet. I showed it to my buddy at the hardware store and he found me a few of them. So my truck doors can't fly open too far now Beyond that I cleaned and put an addition on my basement workbench and mowed the grass :| Quote
Chester Brzostowski Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Hay Ed, I failed to mention that I cut grass in two states on Sunday. The house in Delaware and my full time place in Virginia. Of course if it wasn't for the beers I might have gotten a little more accomplished. I'll get to trimming those hedges someday. Chet... Quote
Young Ed Posted August 13, 2007 Author Report Posted August 13, 2007 Along with mowing the grass I tried to cut some weeds. Went to my parents house and borrowed the string trimmer. I tried to grab the extra string for it just in case. Couldn't find it so of course it ran out right away! So tonight I'll be off to the hardware store for some string. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 17, 2007 Author Report Posted September 17, 2007 Another w/e update. Spent quite a bit of time working on the chevy with some p15 work on the side. Sat finished painting the underside black, painted the inside floor black and yesterday cleaned and epoxy primered the firewall. Tonight if the rain holds off the primer will get coated with primer/surfacer. Sat in between that I wet sanded my dash, sand blasted the glove box door, door hinge, and the center brace. Then primered those 3 pieces and the dash for the second time. Gotta be more careful when sanding this time not to get bare spots around the holes! Quote
55 Fargo Posted September 17, 2007 Report Posted September 17, 2007 Ed, wow thats an incredible amount of work, how about posting some pics of the Chebby progress. As far as the weeds are concerned, Round-up, or Par3 for the weeds mixed in the grass. I know about weeds, cuz I have a 2.5 acre yard...........Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted September 17, 2007 Author Report Posted September 17, 2007 All the pics are still on my camera. I will have to download them. There are 2 of us working on it and we kinda have a deadline. Body has to be back on the frame before the snow falls and wrecks the nicely painted frame and rebuilt engine. Once the firewall is painted the body can go back on the frame. Now if any of you could tell me where I put the body mount rubber pieces I'd be greatful Quote
Merle Coggins Posted September 17, 2007 Report Posted September 17, 2007 Now if any of you could tell me where I put the body mount rubber pieces I'd be greatful Ed, You put them over there where they'd be out of the way and you wouldn't loose them. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 17, 2007 Author Report Posted September 17, 2007 They are lost good thats for sure. This is where having too much stuff can be an issue. They are either in Dads garage, the garage he rents which has a car and then some truck parts in it, either my garage or basement, or the garage at the cabin. So too many places to look. They are not specific chevy parts. Its something we already had which we thought would work for under bed mounts on the 39-47 pickups we have. So they've been around awhile and who knows where they disappeared to now. Quote
1just4don Posted September 17, 2007 Report Posted September 17, 2007 .....in the last place you look,,,so look there first!! Just went thru same thing with sidewalk line crack maker,,,I ended up borrowing one,,,if I had bought a new one,,,for sure would have found old one!! Quote
Merle Coggins Posted September 17, 2007 Report Posted September 17, 2007 .....if I had bought a new one,,,for sure would have found old one!! You'd have found it as soon as you went to put the new one away "where you wouldn't lose it". That's where you'd find the old one. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 17, 2007 Author Report Posted September 17, 2007 The place I'm going to look is the cabin since its 240miles round trip to take a look. I can't imagine we brought them up there but that's about the last place to look. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 18, 2007 Author Report Posted September 18, 2007 Still no body mounts but the firewall got sanded and painted with surfacer last night along with a second coat on my glove box door. Raining today so might not get much done tonight. Quote
55 Fargo Posted September 18, 2007 Report Posted September 18, 2007 Ed, must be raining from the Twin Cities all the way to Winnipeg, its a foggy mist here right now. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 19, 2007 Author Report Posted September 19, 2007 This thread is almost becoming my personal blog Anyway it continued to rain so the only progress made on the chevy was going to the store and buying paint. To mix the proper gray from 1950 was $76 a quart. Went with a very similar color from the 1980 GM lineup. Still spent about $50 on it. Plan is to paint the firewall and jams and then prime the remaining body parts. Car will then go to maaco for the final paint job. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 19, 2007 Report Posted September 19, 2007 Yeah, Ed That darn paint is kinda costly any more. There often seems to be a close match to those old colors in some more modern cars. We don't have a Maaco, or anything quite like it here. Just gotta look around and find someone who will do it cheap. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 19, 2007 Author Report Posted September 19, 2007 After the chevy is done next up is either my 51 plymouth or the 54 IHC of dads. His IHC might win because it needs a lot less welding! My 51 is only 1/2 a car. Basic floors dont worry me too much but those reinforcement ribs that run underneath that are also the body mounts look tough to duplicate. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 24, 2007 Author Report Posted September 24, 2007 Ok another weekend has gone by. Not much happened on the chevy. We took time off to paint the nose and hood on dads 75 olds convert so it sorta matches. The color came out pretty close actually. I also finished wetsanding my dash and glove box door. While we were out there working a guy in the neighborhood who has a 50 chev with a 454 came by. He's kinda interested in our chev! Might go bye bye sooner then I thought. Possibly just a sale or he's got a stude lark for a partial trade. We'll see what happens there. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 1, 2007 Author Report Posted October 1, 2007 Another weekend gone by. No work on the chevy yet again. The other guy in the neighborhood came back and took another look at it. He's interested but needs to move(sell) an MG to make room. You all know how that goes. Despite some pretty rainy weather I did get a nice coat of brown on my p15 steering wheel and on the parts of my new p15 dash that are supposed to be brown. Still learning this painting stuff and all the steps that go with it. Instead of the acrylic enamel we've been painting with I tried urethane. Way harder to paint-the stuff is like water! After a trip back to where I got it we did get some good tips and got the stuff applied. I ended up not thinning the second batch at all. Will take pictures tonight after I remove the tape. I was really tempted to pull it last night but the directions said not for 12 hours. So I waited! The brown came out lighter then I wanted but since I painted everything it should look ok. Well everything but the column. That will have to wait. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 1, 2007 Author Report Posted October 1, 2007 The pics I promised. First the freshly painted wheel and dash part. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 1, 2007 Author Report Posted October 1, 2007 And somewhere along the line Dad bought this 64 plymouth. Quote
David Maxwell Posted October 1, 2007 Report Posted October 1, 2007 ...going to grain it? If so, what process are you using? Quote
Young Ed Posted October 2, 2007 Author Report Posted October 2, 2007 Plan is just to paint brown and tan. The tan will be what should have been woodgrained. Quote
