harry37dodge Posted July 25, 2017 Report Posted July 25, 2017 I installed a 4sp OD in my '37 using one of the aok adapter plates. Very few modifications, but it worked like a charm otherwise! Now I'm without my emergency brake though. I had a thought that if I could remove the drum from my 3 speed and mount it at the rear axle I could rig up a mount for the brake shoe band and be back in business. I got as far as removing the rear pinion seal as the collar on the drum where the seal mates is smaller than the one on the original rear flange that I removed. I think if I can get the right oil seal in place I can figure out the rest. I believe the seal actually holds in the bearing too, so I am a little concerned that the one I get from the parts store will not be robust enough. Has anyone successfully made this modification? Any help would be appreciated. Quote
rekbender Posted July 25, 2017 Report Posted July 25, 2017 The U-joint flange, not the seal, retains the bearing. Chrysler faced the same problem in 1936 when the Warner T86-1A overdrive transmission proved too long to mount a parking brake. They moved the parking brake to the rear backing plates. The 1936 rear end used with O.D. was hypoid so these might work on a '37. They're out there but hard to find - Desoto and Chrysler had them in '36. Quote
dpollo Posted July 25, 2017 Report Posted July 25, 2017 A friend used a disc from an industrial machine with its mechanical caliper on the rear axle input shaft of his 31 Dodge. I am sorry I cannot be more specific as to what it actually is. Quote
Flatie46 Posted July 25, 2017 Report Posted July 25, 2017 I was thinking there use to be a custom disk ebrake set up in the speedway catalog. Quote

Yep, that's the one. I hadn't had a speedway catalog in years, surely someone still caries it, seemed pretty useful in custom applications. Quote
