blue p15 Posted May 26, 2017 Report Posted May 26, 2017 I took the grill emblem off of my '47 to do some repair work to the nose. Was any part of this emblem originally painted? If so, now would be the ideal time to paint it. Quote
Robin (UK) Posted May 26, 2017 Report Posted May 26, 2017 There was no paint on that name plate. Here's a photo from back in the day... 2 Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 (edited) Right you are Robin.. The nameplate is simply stainless steel. The triangular chrome piece just above it is another animal entirely. It is chrome and the background area around the ship is bright red.....like the letters on the stop light, the spacers in between the letters of "Special Deluxe" on the front fender sides, and in the ship design and letters on the hubcaps, but not the ring around the design. BobT-47P15 Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 Hi Tim.......wish what were stainless.....?? Maybe in need to revise the comment. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 (edited) I have a number of the PLYMOUTH name plates....none of which are magnetic if you make that test, but they fail miserably on the seocnd test, buffing...if stainless, it is the prettiest brass yellow steel I have yet to see.... casper50 Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 How can it be brass yellow steel and not be magnetic? Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 (edited) neither does it when you say it is stainless....we need to expand our emotion library...need a sarcasm sign.......I have this one for the humor Edited June 3, 2017 by Plymouthy Adams Quote
Frank Elder Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 Base ferritic stainless steel is usually magnetic. Iron based Austenitic stainless doesn't contain enough ferrites to hold a magnet. Brass based https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-dont-magnets-work-on/ Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 Well, then, I will say I have never tried to buff that front name plate......have only needed to shine them with chrome cleaner or some type of wax......and they appear to be stainless due to the hollow type construction. Just my take on it......no biggie here. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 4, 2017 Report Posted June 4, 2017 the chromium content in the steel is the main ingredient that sets the grade of stainless steel..... Quote

Bob....I have a number of these here at the house and for whatever reason time and elements have caused the flashed on finish to break down on them.....I tried to lightly buff one out and found out why they were not magnetic....disappointing to say the least....was hoping to find flash chrome over stainless like some of the grilles were back in the day......out of 5 I have one that is very nice....two are rough and two are marginal at best. I assure you I would be all in favor of them being made of stainless...... Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 4, 2017 Report Posted June 4, 2017 so......can they be re-done by a chrome shop? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 4, 2017 Report Posted June 4, 2017 being brass they would be so much easier to chrome than that of the pot metal as piting is jusually not an issue here. We sent to brass overflow tank out on the Sunbeam Tiger for chrome and it is beautiful. That was about 15 years ago if I recall. Quote
