I was hoping to get a picture or 2 of the handle that you pull/push to engage the OD unit. I'm trying to find an OD trans for my '59 Dodge Coronet Flathead. I have a line on a couple of '50 Plymouths and 1 had a silver "t" handle on the left side of the column. It may have been the hood release. I know finding the right OD unit for my car is going to be tough.

I don't think it will be tough at all. Most Plymouths from 41 up seemed to have  them, and so did the standard shift Chryslers,Dodges, and DeSotos of the 40's and 50's that came with standard transmissions.

not so tough if you know where to look.  I have a complete setup removed from a good running 58  6 cylinder  with cable and kick down

It is not the same as the popular R10  but still has the parking brake on the back. Without going out to look the engineering code may be R10J  Send me a PM if this is of interest.        I am on Vancouver Island on Canada's west coast so shipping could be an issue.

I haven't mailed a OD trans for a couple of years now,but I have mailed two Ford 3-speed OD transmissions through the mail for less than 25 bucks. One went to San Francisco, and the other one went to Tulsa.  I mailed them parcel post, insured.

The trick is getting them down to 70 lbs or less. One came from a 51 Lincoln and weighed 69 lbs 6 ounces or so wrapped in plastic and ready to go. Had to drain all the oil out of it and take the shift arms off,but got it below 70 lbs. As stated,I didn't even box it. I wrapped it in plastic. I  used plastic water pipe with a cap on the end to keep the input shaft from poking a hole in anything, and cleaned and wrapped the output shaft with duct tape.

Ain't saying the counter clerk is going to be thrilled to have to pick up a 69+ lb trans off of their counter, but if it's under 70 lbs and the fluids have been drained, they have to take it. Probably a good idea to clean all the old grease off of it first, too. Some people get upset over stuff like that.

There is also a shipping company on reality tv named "U-Ship".  https://www.uship.com/

You go on their web site and list whatever it is you have by dimensions and weight, give them the zip code where it is to be picked up and the zip code where it is to be delivered, and truckers already going there anyhow with partial loads will bid on the haul. You pretty much have to have a commercial address for pickup and delivery or you will be lucky to get any bids, though. Nobody wants to back a 18 wheeler up into a drive way on a residential street with cars parked on both sides.

Depending on weight you can probably get one to agree to deliver to you at a local shopping center, though. Whatever you will be getting has to be light enough for you and the trucker to unload and load it,though. Best bet is get a local garage or tow service to accept delivery at their commercial address and have them use their rollback to deliver it to your house if it is big and heavy.

BTW,the last time I used uship was to get a complete 42 Dodge car front clip delivered to eastern NC from Kansas. I don't remember the price now,but it was stupid cheap. Had them deliver it to my fiends commercial garage and then he used his rollback to take it to my house. As a bonus prize, the guy sent me a rear bumper and a honeycomb radiator in perfect condition that I didn't even know was a part of the deal.

Many thanks  but recently I sent one of our forum members 2 inside door handle bezels   $ 13. 85  from origin in Canada to another address in Canada.  wt. about 8 oz. including the mailer.       The only way I can see shipping this overdrive is to lug it down south and ship it via UPS .  In any event, the 70 pound threshold is good advice.   Thanks for the heads up.   Consider yourselves lucky to have the postal rates you do.

You don't have UPS or an equivalent in Canda?

Yes we do  and I am sure their rates are better than Canada Post........still not as good as in the US.

Anyone have a pic of this handle. Does it say Overdrive on the handle???

Plymouth version. This one is probably still there. Trans was gone I believe so no idea if cable was removed nicely or cut.

I read your post again and still am not sure the details, but it sounds like you're wanting to go from a non-overdrive to overdrive.

Someone who knows for sure jump in here, but I seem to recal that '57 on did not use the selector type shift linkage. This would mean that using a transmission from a pre 57 would also require changing the shift linkage.

Can someone verify this?

The 57 to 59s use a transmission with two selector levers  unlike 40 -56 .  Also, the transmission has a rear mount and the whole works is longer. The control has a  tee handle  as pictured above with OVERDRIVE written on it.  When I obtained the transmission I mentioned above , I thought it would be an easy item to resell . However, most of the cars remaining likely have the V 8  and automatic.   It is interesting to me that the bell housing  is drilled to fit both the V8 and the 6.  None of these parts will work on 40 to 56.

Thanks for the pic and the info that I needed so that I know what to look for. I'm wanting to put one in the '59 Dodge that I posted. So it looks like I'm on the hunt for a 3 yr only transmission. I'm thinking that this trans will be in a Plymouth or Dodge '57-'59. Young Ed you think the trans is gone but why wouldn't they take the handle if they took the trans. Is this car near you??? I would take any of the parts that go to that OD trans. Young Ed please give me a call. 501-sixx too six- zero zero sixx sevin. Thanks, Dorsey

Sounds like a previous poster, dpollo, has exactly what you want. Shipping may not be cheap but when you are kind of looking for a needle in a haystack (ie 57-59 overdrive), sometimes you take what is fortunately readily available.

Exactly! Dpollo seems to have that one for sale,so if you want one,now is the time to buy it. Who knows how long it might be before you see another for sale that is complete?

I learned the hard way to not pass up stuff I need that is hard to find. I passed on a finned aluminum high compression head,a 3 carb Knudsen intake with the carbs and the linkage, plus split exhausts manifolds done the right way for what the head alone was worth for my flat 6 Ford, just because I didn't happen to have the cash on hand to buy it right then. And all this was part of a package the guy had been running on the engine in his own hot rod,not a pile of random mismatched parts. The engine went bad so he was replacing it with something else and no longer needed that stuff.

A week later when my retirement check came in,it was all already sold. It's been over 2 years since this happened, and I still haven't seen a finned aluminum head for sale for a flat 6 Ford.

You can bet your bippy if I spot another one for sale it is going to be mine, even if I have to borrow the money.

If it's rare and you want or need it,buy it when you see if if you have to miss a monthly payment to do it. The payment will still be there next month, and you can double up,but the part will be long gone.
