hemicar5000 Posted February 13, 2017 Report Posted February 13, 2017 I have a 1930 dodge dd 6 with overdrive. the 189 ci engine just doesn't have the power to pull the overdrive in high gear pulling a grade. Does anyone have any info on wither the bellhousing bolt pattern will bolt up to a 230.. In the 2014 November issue of Hemmings Classic Car mag there is an article of a 1930 phaeton with a 217 installed. It would seem that it was a bolt in deal, but I don't believe everything I read. Can anyone help. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted February 13, 2017 Report Posted February 13, 2017 There were some previous posts on a problem with the starters of the later engines not fitting the earlier bell housings . Even a mention of cutting the starter housing down to make it fit . Sorry I don't have anything more specific . 1 Quote
classiccarjack Posted February 13, 2017 Report Posted February 13, 2017 One of my good friends in the Plymouth club told me the same thing that Jerry Roberts just mentioned. I am not sure if he had to reuse the 189 flywheel to make it work. Do some more research and get all the parts rounded up. If you need a 230, send me a PM. I may have a bell housing that may work for you as well. Quote
greg g Posted February 13, 2017 Report Posted February 13, 2017 (edited) The OD is not recommended for use in locales with hills, OD is meant to provide for reduced engine rpm while at cruising speeds on relatively level roads. If the OD has freewheeling, that would be a second argument against its use where long steep downgrades are likely to be encountered. These facts would likely have been illuminated in the vehicles owners manual or in an addendum covering the OD's usage. The OD trans were found in quite a few low priced, low powered cars, Studebaker sold the in their small engined Champion line to give the car added flexibility. Using the OD with a vehicle with a small engine gave them the ability to use a numerical high rear end gear set for spritly around town performance, then more relaxed cross country running with the OD engaged. 48ply1stcar Posted February 13, 2017 Report Posted February 13, 2017 No matter if you get a 218 or a 230, I assume that it will be a fresh rebuild or partial rebuild. In that case find yourself a matching bellhousing. Or buy a engine with a bell housing. TRUST ME. Quote
plyroadking Posted February 13, 2017 Report Posted February 13, 2017 Drifting off topic a little, what overdrive do you have in your 30 Dodge? I've picked up several early overdrive transmissions thinking I might fit one into my 30 Plymouth. So far all the input shafts are incompatible with the stock 30 stuff, they all have inputs like my 40 and 55 plymouths. Do you have an actual overdrive transmission or an overdrive unit adapted to your 30 trans? Quote
greg g Posted February 14, 2017 Report Posted February 14, 2017 How hard is it to replace the input shaft??? Quote
