Hi,

First time posting. I've purchased a 1948 Plymouth coupe special de luxe with work   :). I am from The Haque The Netherlands and a us car enthousiast.

It has a 218 flathead six not Original because it has on the engine tag IND********  and the Original engine nr P15******** is on the chassis left rear.

First i am removing all the antirust coating from the chassis.

I could not find the id tag on the firewall, proberly it is lost bij the previous owner who already did restauration work, the tag on the doorpillar driversside is present.  I want to order a reproduction id plate for the firewall but i need a example pic of the Original. perhaps some can post an pic so i van also see the location on the firewall.

The Ind indicates it is an industrial engine, coming from a welder, compressor, aircraft tug, aircraft auxiliary power unit, irrigation pump, or even an air raid siren.    Industrial engines may have been equipped with heavier duty components compared to car engines, so don't think you are getting cheated of any thing.  In fact it may be a 230 cu inch instead of the stock 218.  You can determine this by measuring the piston stroke. In the head above #6 cylinder you will note a pipe plug screwed into the head.  You can remove it, insert a piece of stiff wire (make sure it is at least 7 inches long) the wire will contact the top of the piston and ride it through the stroke.  Pulling all the plugs will allow you to turn the engine over by hand.  Measure the distance the wire travels from top dead center to bottom dead center.  4 3/8 = 217.8,  4 5/8= 230 cu.

The fire wall tags a red oval that stated the car was made by Plymouth are available  as reproductions on e bay from a couple of sources,  the other tag a rectangular one was from Briggs Manufacturing the company that did the body stamping for Plymouth.  The number was a sequential number referring to Briggs production records.  Don't know if those are available or being reproduced.  The serial number on the doorpost is the Chrysler corporation I'd number that was assigned and affixed to a completed  as assembled car.  

Don't know how your DMVmot titles vehicles or what ownership paper work you have but most American states used engine number mirrored by your frame stamping or the serial number on the doorpost tag.  Hopefully your paper work matches one of them.  The firewall tags were not used here for vehicle I'd purposes.

I have a 50 Ply. 4 dr. that is registered in Calif. by the Briggs manufacturing body number under the hood  which it definitely should not be! (USUALLY) ??? It .Does not match the manufacturers tag on the door frame nor the frame number. Oh,  it also had No motor so no number there either. Made me very nervous for a bit, but I  just decided that it must have been checked and approved by this states Highway patrol (final word here in  Calif.) on such things. Problem that both the Body Mfg. tag and the Factory tag are just held on the sheet metal screws. In some US states I would have also screwed up by removing the body ID tag and cleaned it, painted over with red paint and wiping clean the tops of the numbers and then painted over it all with a clear paint to make it readable and nice looking and screwed it back on, which I have read on this forum  to Do Not Do that in some states!?? Forbidden??.

To you it will definitely be up to the local authorities to what is required and please find out as soon as possible Before spending any money on repairs and such.

My Plymouth is Original from Texas, perhaps someone knows what id nr they used in Texas to registrated it.

The serial number on the doorpost tag are only numbers, is this correct ?  and the number on the chassis starts with a P ( as the Original engine nr ).

Started the number on the firewall tag also with a P ?

It is imported to Belgium around 1967 en registrated in Belgium in 1968.

So the paperwork is ok, but is is also possible to do a check on the car.

You can send the serial number to the Chrysler Historical folks.  They will for a fee send you a facsimile of the build card.  It will tell you when and where your car when built, and what dealership it was sent to.
