What's A Brake Shoe Arcing Machine Worth?

Recommended Posts

I have a friend who owned a shop and has a brake arching machine he won't ever use again.  How much you think I should offer?  I think for him it would be a token offer. I don't think he's the type to just give it away.  It worked the last time he used it, but some animals got dirt into the motor compartment and he doesn't know if the motor still works. Since he will never try to clean it up himself, it's pretty much an "I'll take it as it is" kind of thing.  But I have a hunch that with the dirt removed and the motor cleaned up, that it will run okay. I'm certainly willing to take a chance for the right price.  He also thinks that he had a Miller brake adjusting tool "somewhere".  I'm taking him out to lunch to look for that "somewhere".

I think the obvious thing to do before even offering anything would be to turn it on and see if it runs....

Then check out the abrasive  sanding drum.. see if it's still good. Some of these machines are very hard to find the sanding drum cones.

look it over good. note the make and model..

Go online and see whats available and price.

There are a few different types and manufacturers.

Then make an offer after you know what he's got.  Buy smart... don't buy an old piece that won't be good for you.

I wouldn't worry about comments on how dangerous the machine is regarding dust..use it outside and aim the exhaust into the woods or at a neighbors you don't like!

probably worth a bit to some shop that specializes in the older stuff and knows how to use it properly....and uh....make sure that neighbor does not have a good fan blowing in your direction..

I saw a brand new Ammco Safe Arc on the Bay asking 1700.00 clams I offered oysters but he refused.  Also make sure you get the setup book for the arcing tool.  Currently the miller brake tool is going for 600+ on Ebay with 6 sleeves.
