Hey Don,

Brown's Valley is just down the road from me here in Grass Valley. I wonder what mine he was working in ? Just for fun I looked in the local phone book and found an L. Coatney in Nevada Co. None in Yuba Co.

Reg;

Are you near Marysville, California? George Combe Coatney died and is buried there. To the best of my knowledge he did not leave any family in California. GCC was born in Indiana in the late 1860's. He fathered his first child (daughter Bertha) around 1887. Three years later he married the mother of the child and soon fathered another daughter Grace Ethel. About 6 months after the birth of Grace his wife (Liza Ella McClellan Coatney) died of unknown reasons. At that time GCC left Indiana. He traveled south and spent time in Arkansas and Texas before heading west. He never returned to Indiana that I am aware of. The death of his wife has always been a bit suspect in my mind. GCC was a cowboy and was in several gunfights that I am aware of. He also spent some time in a Texas jail as I have a letter he wrote to his mother while in jail. I have letters he wrote to his brother (my grandfather) from all of the places he traveled. The last letter was written from Browns Valley. I am curious if there is a grave marker for him in the Marysville Cemetery where he is buried. For more information on him and his daughters follow the link below.

Yes. I'm about 45 minutes from Marysville by car. My auto body man has a shop there. Next time I'm down there I'll go have a look with camera in hand.

The worst thing I ever heard from my grandfather was about one of his cousins

suspected to have a brain tumor. He had this big lump on his forehead that just got bigger and bigger, must have been before they had xrays, anyway they operated and found he had a nest of guinea worms, the total length of thirty two feet. These worms got stuck between his skull and the skin and had nowhere to go.

It's odd that you mention these worms. I had never heard of them before until last week while watching something about them on tv. It was about mosquitos but showed how and what happens when this flying worm? attach's to a mosquito and plants it's eggs in it. The eggs are then exchanged to a human when it goes for blood and the process begins of nesting under the skin. This also showed someone who had a huge lump on their head and then what was under the lump. It wasnt pretty. I'm guessing this does not happen here state side since the worm is not in this area.

This about the sickest thing I have read in a long time. Good thing I didn't have spagheti for dinner. Eric

Guinea worms were a problem in Northern Australia in the late 1800s. From what my Grandfather told me as a kid these things entered the body thru the soles of the feet. Walking barefoot near a well was a dangerous pastime. How this guy got these things in his head no one knows, however, if he had a fall near a water source and his head contacted the ground that could have been the answer. I think these things are also called screw worms.

Apparently, we still get all kinds of worms that cause all kinds of problems that are misdiagnosed.

Way back when people would deworm frequently, but not anymore. The parasites are still around and we are made of meat and that's what they like. :(

We still worm our pets and livestock, how come not ourselves?

When yellow fever was killing people they finally figured out that mosquitos were the carriers. One way they thought to stop them was by building tall brick walls around homes etc. The idea was that mosquitos could not fly over them or that high in the air. There are still areas where the old homes are that have these walls.

After seeing that info show on these worms I would imagine your grandfather was still going by the same "theory" about picking them up from going barefooted as these people did about the walls. I would imagine this is how it got on the fellows head and not by falling on the ground.

Like I said though I just heard of them and maybe there is another type worm that does the same thing but I could almost swear that they used the same name to describe these things. However they get on you all I know is I wouldnt want that happening to me.

"How do people get Guinea worm disease?

People get infected when they drink standing water containing a tiny water flea that is infected with the even tinier larvae of the Guinea worm. Over the course of a year in the human body, the immature worms pierce the intestinal wall, grow to adulthood, and mate. The males die, and the females make their way through the body, maturing to a length of as much as 3 feet, and ending up near the surface of the skin, usually in the lower limbs. The worms cause swelling and painful, burning blisters. To soothe the burning, sufferers tend to go into the water, where the blisters burst, allowing the worm to emerge and release a new generation of millions of larvae. In the water, the larvae are swallowed by small water fleas, and the cycle begins again."

My stepfather liked to go fishing way up in Northern Canada,"Lake Sobourne",(sp?). He was a big fan of Sushi so he decided Northern would make great Sushi. I declined. One of his friends who had came along ,about a year later had these long worms coming out of his rectum. He thought he was doing great losing weight. He thought he was going to die. He thought his guts were coming out!! The cure was easy. Moose Fluke Worm!! I will take my fish fried!! Eric

the schoolmaster was going to educate the class against the evils of Whiskey, and brought to class a glass of water and a glass of fine Irish whiskey... "now Children, i'm going to drop a common earthworm into this glass of water, and you see how he swims about happily?"

the children all nod their obedient heads...

"now Children, i'll drop this unfortunate worm into the devil's own brew, and you'll see how he curls up and dies?"

the little heads bob again EXCEPT ONE, little Colin... who pipes up..

"so Father shall never suffer worms again!"

You can buy screw worm and blow fly spray for livestock,,,they get it all the time. And docs say we dont have that here,,,yeah right, dont believe that old crap.

There are whole web sites dedicated to Morgellons disease. People actually have that. IF they take the right med or enough salt,,,they watch the worms crawling right out of their hand, arm, head etc. Somebody put one in a clean jar once and it turned into a pretty white moth!!

We HAVE parasites,,,docs dont think so,,,but we do. Some people have treated themselves with Ivormec. Whenever I get arond that stuff,I get sick,,,so it must be klilling stuff to make the body toxic,,,thats how it works!!They say Ivomec isnt safe for people, I dunno!!

Staying in the house won't save you if you eat meat you could end up with a hydatid cyst ! They can grow to the size of a baseball and if broken during surgical removal will spread through the body like wildfire. Or you could end up with a spider in your ear ! My wife woke one morning and complained she was hearing scratching noises in one ear, this went on for a day before she sought medical treatment. Alive and well a poisonous white back spider was removed and the noise was stopped. Be careful when you sleep.
