Since my registration is due this month, I am going to take the plunge and get an antique plate.  Does anybody know if my 54 half ton would have been issued a truck plate or a passenger car plate?  I'm in Pennsylvania.  I found a website talking about it, but I'm not sure if the truck designation excluded half-ton pickups.

Here are some examples of a passenger plate and a truck plate:

In my state, MN the trucks had a different plate....really it is somethign you might have to research a bit with your DMV or other classic owners in the area.

NOTES: PennDOT provided the following reply regarding a Year-of -Manufacture program:  "PennDOT issues plates designated for Antique and Classic vehicles but does not have a Year-of-Manufacture program.  However, since Pennsylvania only requires the license plate be displayed on the rear of the vehicle, an owner may display a decorative plate on the front of their vehicle that displays the year it was manufactured."

In lieu of an antique or classic registration plate, the owner of an antique or classic motor vehicle may request permission from PennDOT to
display a vintage registration plate. A vintage registration plate is a “period-issued” registration plate from 1906 to 1976 to be displayed on
an antique or classic vehicle with the same corresponding year of manufacture. Vintage registration plates are not manufactured or issued
by PennDOT. Applicants are required to provide the vintage registration plate they wish to display on their antique or classic vehicle.
The use of a vintage registration plate is governed by Section 1340 of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code which states: “It is unlawful for any
person to operate a motorcycle or vehicle with Antique, Classic, Collectible or Vintage registration plates for general daily transportation.
Permitted use shall be limited to participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, occasional transportation and similar uses.”
Occasional transportation and similar use is defined as one day a week.
To display a vintage registration plate, the vehicle must already be branded as an antique or classic vehicle. If the vehicle is not branded as
an antique or classic vehicle, you must also complete and submit Form MV-11, "Application for Permanent Antique, Classic or Collectible
Registration Plate" and pay all appropriate fees.

I have antique tags on my pickup. I live in Pa. and have never seen any YOM plates on antique cars or trucks. Antique plates are a one time caost none expiring and no yearly inspection. My thought is if antique the owner would keep vechicle safe by self inspection.
