My truck didn't feel right coming back from a parade yesterday morning. I could hear a rhythmic sound coming from the front end or tires but couldn't decide what it was. My brother had redone the front brakes before I bought it back from him a couple of years ago so I thought I would check if the wheel bearings needed repacked. When I took off the dust cap on the right front I saw that there wasn't a cotter key and the nut had backed off half way down the threads!!! I repacked the bearings on both sides and should be ready to go again.

This is an example of why I only stick to county roads when I go somewhere.

Sometimes people get annoyed when you are working on something and don't contribute to a conversation, but I like to get to a point where I know I can leave off before I divert my attention-that has saved me more than once-especially when I had a beer in hand! Mike

We had a similar disaster. While working on a friends 97 chev 1500 we ran into trouble getting the pitman arm pulled. Various times all 4 of us working on it left to try and find a solution. Well I guess we all assumed that while waiting for whoever was gone to come back the front brakes had gotten back together. So its all done and the tire goes back on with out the caliper attached! I heard a funny clunk at the end of the drive way and next thing I see is my buddy jumping out and doing a fred flinstone stop with his feet. We pushed it back inside and got it back together but that could have been uglier.

dodgepu1946,

It's interesting you mention brakes. I drove the truck after work to a Cruise In at a local gas station (about 5 miles one way). It is amazing how good of a brake pedal you have when all 4 wheels are intact!!! There's no more pumping and then hoping it stops okay.
