50net Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 (edited) about to attempt brake overhaul.pulled tires.yep one side lefty other righty.for the question i see front brake hubs have a spring going around it,rear doesnt.does anyone know what spring is for and does it have to come off before trying to remove hub?tks this is a 1950 coronet Edited October 3, 2015 by 50net Quote
Mlindblom Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 Not 100% sure. But I did a quick search. Appears they may be anti chatter springs?? Plymouthyadams can chime in I found that on a reply from a question on a dodge royal. I'd say loosen up the adjusters take off thespindle nut and see if it comes off. Just be safe and remember the bearing is right behind the nut. I'm curious to hear what the spring is for. Pictures always help. Quote
TodFitch Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 I believe the spring around the outside of the drum is to reduce brake squeal noise. If you squint hard when you look at a brake drum you'll notice it has some resemblance to a bell and it will ring like one. With an appropriate spring you can change the natural frequency of the ringing so that doesn't happen when brakes are applied. No reason to remove it to remove or service the drums/brakes. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 anti chatter..you can run with or without them but never with only one side and not the other side.. Quote
50net Posted October 3, 2015 Author Report Posted October 3, 2015 Thanks for the info.didnt think was a tension spring.will leave well along.will check with napa if have puller everyone uses.found front passenger kinda locked.not sure how to post a picture but will try tomorrow Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 A puller is not required and should not be used on the front drums. If the drum does not slide off easily back off on the minor adjusters. Quote
50net Posted October 3, 2015 Author Report Posted October 3, 2015 This is picture of spring on hub.puller is for rear drums which i read is reguired to pull Quote
Mlindblom Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 Yes, rear will require a Good purpose built puller. A trick for the front is too back of the adjusters and bolt the wheel on and use that to shake from side to side to loosen the drum off. Quote
50net Posted October 4, 2015 Author Report Posted October 4, 2015 thanks for the trick tip.hoping tomorrow is better weather to try. Quote
