about to attempt brake overhaul.pulled tires.yep one side lefty other righty.for the question i see front brake hubs have a spring going around it,rear doesnt.does anyone know what spring is for and does it have to come off before trying to remove hub?tks    this is a 1950 coronet

Not 100% sure. But I did a quick search. Appears they may be anti chatter springs?? Plymouthyadams can chime in I found that on a reply from a question on a dodge royal. I'd say loosen up the adjusters take off thespindle nut and see if it comes off. Just be safe and remember the bearing is right behind the nut. I'm curious to hear what the spring is for. Pictures always help.

I believe the spring around the outside of the drum is to reduce brake squeal noise. If you squint hard when you look at a brake drum you'll notice it has some resemblance to a bell and it will ring like one. With an appropriate spring you can change the natural frequency of the ringing so that doesn't happen when brakes are applied. No reason to remove it to remove or service the drums/brakes.

Thanks for the info.didnt think was a tension spring.will leave well along.will check with napa if have puller everyone uses.found front passenger kinda locked.not sure how to post a picture but will try tomorrow

Yes, rear will require a Good purpose built puller. A trick for the front is too back of the adjusters and bolt the wheel on and use that to shake from side to side to loosen the drum off.
