John Burke Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 The wife says I have more gas than the car....most of the time....John Quote
greg g Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 Mine works but is empty with the needle showing apx 1/8 tank. top 7/8 of the scale is steady and representative of tank level. If I fill up at 1/2 tank it takes about 8 gallons. i believe the tank capacityis 17 gallons Quote
Reg Evans Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 During lunch time I frequent a local gas station/mini mart. Not for gasoline, but for bean borrito and a coke. When I take the food up to the counter to pay the attendants always asks "any gas?" I usually respond "not yet ,but probably in an hour" bah dah boom! Quote
Normspeed Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 Same here. 1/4 = empty. Mine got really confusing because P24s have a 17 gallon tank except for my wagon which has 14. Going by the odometer and known mpg, I kept thinking, there's gotta be another couple gallons in there...sputter sputter. I had to learn the hard way ....... Quote
james curl Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 Mine sits on full forever then starts down, when it hits 1/2 tank, which could be about thirty minutes after it left full you better be sitting at the pump are carrying a five gallon can of gas cause you are out of gas. Going to order an aux gauge and sender from Speedway and mount under the center of the dash for now. Quote

Why would a suburban fuel tank have less capacity than a sedan? Different rear ratio er what? Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 1, 2007 Author Report Posted July 1, 2007 That's interesting. Why would a suburban fuel tank have less capacity than a sedan? Different rear ratio er what? Reg; This is most likely a real estate issue. Not enough room for a bigger tank? Quote
55 Fargo Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 Can't figure out how to get the sending unit into my 2 gallon plastic jerrycan gas tank.LOL Fred Quote
Reg Evans Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 Ya know Don...if I hadn't already discovered that the gravitational pull has gotten noticebly stronger since the new millennium I might have willingly dropped down on one knee to make my own appraisal of my 52 Burb. Don Coatney Posted July 1, 2007 Author Report Posted July 1, 2007 Ya know Don...if I hadn't already discovered that the gravitational pull has gotten noticebly stronger since the new millennium Reg; Glad to hear I am not the only one to note the gravity increase. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 Reg;Glad to hear I am not the only one to note the gravity increase. I've had the same gravity problem. Not only that, seems I have more real estate when I cut the grass too. My yard is all of a sudden larger than it was 30 years ago. Quote
Reg Evans Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 Well...you're in luck with that problem Norm. There are eye doctors out there everware that can give you a temporary perscripton to stave off that problem. I've searched high and low in them yaller pages for an anti gravity doc to no avail. Weight!!!! Maybe under helium augmentation injections. Quote

Normspeed Posted July 2, 2007 Report Posted July 2, 2007 I think it's because the spare tire sits horizontally in a well over the tank. They had to make that part of the tank skinnier. I would have expected a wagon to hold more gas but it's the other way around. That's interesting. Why would a suburban fuel tank have less capacity than a sedan? Different rear ratio er what? Quote
Charlie Olson Posted July 2, 2007 Report Posted July 2, 2007 In PLYWOOD, 1/2 = empty, 3/4 = alert, F = alot, pegged all the way to the right of the gauge = currently parked next to a gas pump. I learned this on the day PLYWOOD ran bone dry while going up a steep hill and the gauge lying to me with a 1/2 reading. A kind fellow with a full 5 gallon container helped; after a shot into the carb and about 15 secs of cranking PLYWOOD started right up. The gauge read 3/4; now I know my gauge is accurate, just a bit skewed. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 2, 2007 Report Posted July 2, 2007 My fuel gauge works---mostly. Sometimes it stays on E for a while, then goes up to something else. Have a new Atwater Kent sending unit in the tank. When putting in the gauge last time, we thought it was off and we gently bent the needle at the bottom. So now, when full, it shows a little over 3/4. Which means when it shows E, there is still just a bit of gas left. You can bend the needle at the bottom where it comes from the back side, under the bottom edge of the face plate. Kind of a Z configuration there. Just twist gently to move the needle to the right or left according to what your car needs. Hope this makes sense. What I really need to do now is go back and re-bend the needle to the right again - it actually was correct at first, we just didn't think so. Quote
