stan's52 Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 There is a guy that has a over drive transmission for sale. He says it's for a 54 Dodge. He is asking 300.00. Is this worth getting? I have a 52 Concord. Will it fit my motor? If I get it I will need to shorten my drive shaft, but that is not a problem. Stan Quote
doctor dirt Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 If its a Borg Warner R10 then its a Chrysler designed OD made by Borg Warner for the 3 spd manuals. Is he stating its in working condition? Even if so lets see what others on the forum say about parts availabilty. i know the manuals are in print I have two. I have a 51 Concord P22 with the OD and they are worth their weight in gold compared to the third gear ratio on the tranny. Dropping to a comforting rpm will get you down the road in ease and your flathead will appreciate it. Doc 1 Quote
suntennis Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 A rebuilt overdrive unit will run up to $1000 or more. The guy that rebuilds these units would be happy to pay $300 for it. If the OD is in good condition which means it works well $300 is a good price. An OD should refer to a three speed trans with the overdrive unit attached to it. Does the price include the relay and cable for activating it? Parts are available for the three speed trans and the OD unit. The highest price part is probably a rebuilt planetary gear for over $300. USNPJS Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 Anyone have a source for rebuilt OD units? A conversion is in my cars future and am just collecting resources Quote
Young Ed Posted August 10, 2015 Report Posted August 10, 2015 If you don't buy it there are probably 1/2 a dozen or more on here that would buy it in your place. Try to get the cable and relay but I'd still buy it either way. Since your car is the short WB you are right you'll have some driveshaft work in your future. Quote

Stan Hi Stan - there are some great posts on the forum on overdrives and a great blog posting on the topic of identifying them here is the link http://p15-d24.com/blog/17/entry-88-the-rough-field-spotters-guide-for-mopar-overdrives/ A rebuilt overdrive unit will run up to $1000 or more. I agree with your sediment on $300 being an excellent deal and I don't doubt for a second the planetary is worth over $300, however I am afraid on the rebuild overdrive unit running up $1000 or more, you may be like me and living in the past. Mind you the or more does cover you. If anyone has a source of a rebuilt one for $1000 or so please contact me as the pricing I am seeing has been way north of twice that price. Your point remains a great one though as $300 would be a great deal. Quote
Mark Haymond Posted August 10, 2015 Report Posted August 10, 2015 With my 1947 P15 coupe I took out an R10 overdrive tranny and put in a standard three speed tranny. They trannys were the same length so my drive shaft did not have to be changed. Quote

Don Coatney Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 Probably to help fund his 318 V-8 swap. 1 Quote
Mark Haymond Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 Dodgeb4ya, the synchronizers seemed to act sluggishly on normal 3 speed shifts so I swapped in a spare non OD drive I had. My R10 is disassembled and in a plastic storage tub. Maybe I will get around to assembling it and put in my stock 50 Plymouth. 1 Quote
