little help with bolts and nuts & new headers

Recommended Posts

Got my Moose headers back from ceramic powder coat and getting ready to put them on :-)

knowing enough from reading here and talking with others that the previous owner had not used stock bolts and washers for the intake and exhaust manifolds

In fact he/she used bolts for the two between the exhaust

I ordered a set from vintage power wagon

I received 13 studs, 9 copper nuts 4 tapered nuts and 8 washers 4 copper and tapered too and four flat

I am fairly certain that the four tapered nuts are for the outside (Cyl 1 & 6) exhaust ports and that I use the copper tapered washers/spacers with them

and that the other four washers are for the studs that share the intake and exhaust manifolds

>>>> but that leaves me 5 washers short  or do I not use/need washers on the other studs?

Second question is do I need to use sealant only on the two studs between the exhaust manifold/headers or on other studs too - seems that when I pulled the stud on the lower exhaust port closest to the firewall water also came out of there as well?

hopefully pictures below will also help.

To answer your second question you should use a sealant on any stud that goes into the water passage. I always use anti-seize and have never had a leak. If using anti-seize might as well do all of them.

What? No pics of the sweet new headers? What a tease :) I'll be ordering from him very soon as well

Anti-seize isn't really intended to stop leaks. I always use permatex #2 non hardening. As for the bolts I believe some cars did come with bolts over studs in those 2 spots.

The 2 long studs would've needed to be cut down if you were going to use them, as they are for stock exhaust manifolds or the cast type headers. I used long bolts on my cast headers and Permatex on ALL the studs & both bolts.....no leaks.

Got all installed and up and idling with new Langdon 2 barrel carb. Went to put it in the street up a steep drive way and no power. Then parked it again. Checked timing and then suddenly it would not start. Gave up for the day... Guess I'm back to basics. Anybody here know the recommended advance for the Langdon HEI distributer I can not find my paper work for it. Thanks in advance!!

What, no pics of the new jewelery? I have my paperwork somewhere for the HEI, but by the time I find it, you probably would've talked to Tom by then.

Called out for pictures again - Ok here you go again. Looked at the car briefly after work today - not sure how, but think the distributer pushed/jumped up when I left it (probably too) loose trying to adjust the timing - I brought the motor to tdc at #4 and will install when I can - maybe even tomorrow. If that gets me started again - the more I think about it the more I believe I have a vacuum leak. No power, new carb idle screw very far in to give it lots of gas to idle - all seems to say too much air and not enough fuel.... I just can't hear it because of the open headers........

OK OK now the jewelry
