grimiemitz Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 I'm new to the forum and am in the process of restoring a 1947 dodge 1/2 ton pickup.I bought a dodge parts book which gives me dodge bearing numbers and I crossed them to timken so as to easily and cheaply find them on Ebay but am unable to cross number 698 414 does anyone know what that bearing is it is refered to as axel drive front bearing. by the way it uses the same cup as the rear pinion bearing Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 If you remove the bearings from your vehicle you will find a manufactures number on each cup and cone. Carry that number and or bearing to any bearing supply house such as Motion Industries or Bearings Inc and they should have them in stock. Personally if I were in need of bearings EBay is the last place I would look. No need to go to antique parts places as these bearings are still being manufactured and are available new. 2 Quote
Young Ed Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 I agree with Don on the source. Also this bearing and its mate go on the pinion in the rear end. Doubtful either one need replacement. Quote
JBNeal Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 one of the problems with roller bearings is galling from years of non-use...those black lines & dots on the cones & rollers may not seem like much, but things can get ugly when them relics shell out...to save me any headaches in the future when working on old farm trailers, tractors, trucks, etc I opt to replace roller bearing cones & rollers if they are not pristine 2 Quote
desoto1939 Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 Ebay will provide you some of the bearing and cones. If you can find an old Tmikin Bearing and Cone I feel these would be better than what you are now getting from the parts houses are selling the Chineese stuff, The Old USA Made Timkin bearing is my preference because being made in the USA ove the the other junk stuff. See if you can get a Timkin USA bearing first. Just my two cents. Rich HArtung Quote
Mrbrylcreem Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 Do you have any pictures of your truck. Quote
grimiemitz Posted January 9, 2015 Author Report Posted January 9, 2015 I haven't pulled the rear apart yet , just preppin, and the dodge part book threw a number at me that I couldn't cross through timken, which I also prefer to use if possible , If you look on Ebay there are a lot of folks who have parts that they are not staking their retirement on. You can get good unused parts that are from when these cars were made, thats what it's about. Both bearings are in the rear end on the pinion, the front of which is one number different than the rear but uses the same race. At this stage the truck is completely apart. The frame and rims and other parts are powder coated, the engine is about to be rebuilt, the cab is in another garage waiting for more time and money, but I definitely will show it as time goes along. By the way the powder coated frame is hanging on the wall of the shop. Quote
