1940 Dodge rare parts blues.♫

I was watching an auction for some front bumper pieces on eBay. Something didn't go right with the automatic bid site I singed up with, I was going to be away for the afternoon and my bid didn't even get placed! Really wanted these pieces. :(

Here's a photo from the auction, I highlighted the parts I'm looking for. Anyone have spares? It's for my 1940 Dodge Luxury Liner Deluxe. I probably should post a "want ad" but, thought I'd just drop a line in this pool and see if any of you may have it. PM me if you can. :)

Thanks much!

did not get placed or was there an bidder with the same money who placed earlier than you...if same bid only the early bird gets the worm...also some sellers restrict some types of bidding/bidders...

watch close as it could have been a pick up only bid and no shipping implied..prior arrangement have to be made etc for the bid to go in.

lots of things could have gone wrong..also if you bidder software is low on funds and less than the charge would have been for the bid to be placed..it would not have been entered...

The item listed at $69.00 opening bid. It sold for $69.00 with three bids. Very odd... If there was three bids, it should have gone up. My max bid didn't even register. So, whatever it was, it cost me the parts I could really have used. >:(

did you have just the opening bid listed or did you have incremental bids with x-amount max offering....if you had listed above the opening you should have gotten a bid placed unless the ad prevented you from bidding due to low count, location or your software was low on proxy funds..if 10 bidders listed the same price all bids would be counted probably but the first/earliest posted bid by proxy is the taker...

3 bids, same bidder upping his max bid in case anyone else bids.

I used an online program, like hammersnipe. I've used it before but, I think I failed to change the password on hammersnipe after I had to change my password with ebay. eBay wasn't going to take no for an answer when asked if I would like to change my password. So, hammersipe didn't log in and bid because the passwords didn't match.

Regardless, it's a total bummer. Now a few more months, maybe a year looking for those lousy parts.

So, any '40 Dodge owners have spares of the parts I'm searching for?

I believe you're right. I wasn't sure if the same bidder upped it several times would show as more bids. I guess it does.

Sorry, no extras. Even so, my Canadian '40 Dodge 'Custom' has a different set of bumper guards than you need.

Robert......only thing is with a name like Andrew Douglas I have a double dose of Scotish tightwadedness.........lol........have actually thought about getting some brass or alloy strap and making one......I made the centre bar in the front windscreen from 1" x 1/2" brass bar and 1/4" square rod soldered on the back for the window division 40 yrs ago and got it plated........very nice.......lol.........let me guess, the one on ebay went for 11.50 and 5.00 postage........lol............andyd

Well, I'll keep my eyes open for you Andy! The one I saw on ebay a while ago, I can't recall what it went for but, it wasn't toooo expensive. I never desired that piece, I doubt my car came with it originally, I think it was an option. I've seen many photos of '40 Dodge's without it from the era.

As for the center windshield divider, the original is pot metal. Originally painted the body color. :)

Robert, have never seen the center bar painted body colour, mine being pot metal was cracked in about 4 pieces when I took it off......the brass one being beautifully chromed gets lots of comments .......when I tell them I made it I get some strange looks............its surprising what you end up doing when you're young, bright eyed & bushy tailed......lol..........I made it with just a hacksaw, a couple of flat files and a soldering iron........still looks as good as it was when made......that grille molding...have you ever seen one close up?...........it appears to be a pressed piece of steel......its not pot metal is it?........andyd

Hi Andy,

The centre grille piece is not pot metal. Looks to be pressed stainless. I bought mine off eBay many years ago. The windshield divider question is interesting. My '40 is chrome finished while my '41 is flat black. The '40 has the stainless trim around the windshields while the '41 does not.

Phil, I suppose that the finish on the centre bar would also have been influenced by whether the car had the stainless window molding also, however here in Oz all the Oz 1940 Mopars I've seen over the past 45yrs have all had just the rubber windscreen seal, no stainless but all have had the chromed centre bar...........but the 1941 Plymouth Coupe I had which was a proper US export car but made in Sth Africa had again the rubber seal only and a non chromed centre bar, it being just the pot metal which I just used metal polish on(the attached pic shows the heavy duty sun visor centre bracket I made but the centre bar and plain rubber are also shown) ............it was an older restoration so I suppose it may have had the chromed stripped from the bar but that would be a doubtful exercise............it interesting how and why our old bombs end up how they are........lol................andyd

Gidday Bob, trust you and Cooper are going o/k..........as I mentioned all the oz ones I've seen were chromed, maybe it was something TJ Richards the body builders just decided to do.......andyd

Well, I thought I found your parts. Coming home from Mopar’s in the Park in MN, we stopped to see fellow POC member Bob Colburn. He just picked up this Dodge, but I just realized it’s a 41. He said he knew about it for years, and tried to buy it. Owner finally decided to get rid of it, so he called Bob.

Really rusty, but it has some good parts. That steering wheel is not bad. If anyone wants to contact Bob, here is his info:
