Hello all. I started stripping the rear end of the truck last Monday. My intention is the clean and paint the chassis and under body. I will

be doing the cleaning and painting in three stages. The rear first. Then under the cab, then the front end. I will also be replacing all the

bushings and pins on the suspension . Plus replacing the inner and outer rear end seals and rear pinion seal.

Hmmm - you make me think about taking the fenders off of mine to inspect the point where it meets the bed wall.

As you can see the truck has it's original fender welting. I feel that it holds more moister than it should. Plus one does not know what is

going on in these hidden areas. It's probably good practice checking these hidden areas and treating them accordingly.

Hmmm - you make me think about taking the fenders off of mine to inspect the point where it meets the bed wall.

 

What's intesting to me is the side panels for the high-side beds didn't change for 48-53. The embosment (ribs) on those panels caters to the round fenders and not the square fenders of 53. So the fender welting is plugging (bridging?) the valleys from the said embossment. Note the relief for the round fenders in your photo....might be worth checking out those areas.

Thanks. Monday I am pulling the back axel and springs. All the seals need replacing. I will also be cleaning and painting the axel and backing plates.

Hello. Please see work as far. I have redone and reassembled the rear. All new seals, bearings plus crown & pinion and brake pipes. I have been working on the inner and under cab.

I have stripped off the front and started cleaning. I will be replacing. Fuel pump kit, Carter carb kit, King pin set, tie rod ends, spring bushings and pins plus pitman arm kits & covers. Plus a set of shocks. Plus installing a new water distribution pipe.

Wow, that is going to be a sweet looking ride when you're done.  The cab patina matches what I'm finding on my 46 dump.  I'm just going to do what you did and clean up the chassis and, buff out the paint, and wax it.  It's even nicer inside. I like the look of it's age,    Mike

Thanks for sharing and the pictures! This is very helpful for me as I am 2-3 months behind you. I've finally got my B2B stripped down the the chassis and am getting ready to follow in your footsteps. Your truck looks like it's coming along very nicely!

Many thanks. Yes it has been a few months in the doing. I started in May and hope to have it mostly done by Dec. I am dying to take it out on the road for good old spin. The problem is that people will have to slide underneath to really appreciate what I have done. But at least I will know.

Looking good. I wouldn't worry about artificial deadlines. A good job takes as long as it takes.

I have all sorts of people pestering me about mine. I tell them all the same thing. It ain't done until I say it's done. ;)

Update. Flushed the block of all the crud. Installed new WDP and water pump. I also ran all new fuel and brake pipes. Installed the radiator and ran the engine to find any leaks. One was found on the fuel pump. It was promptly sorted. The one issue I had when we bleed the brakes was a leak out the front end of the Master cylinder. It seems the brake fluid is getting past the seal on the plunger. I will take it in for inspection tomorrow. I had it resleeved a few months ago. I will be installing the front grill , fenders, hood and running boards this coming week. I think a bottle of Champaign on the bonnet would go down well after 8 months off the road.

Paul. Hello. Yip I love the patina. Plus if one sprays it up all nice. You become like a real mother hen. This way it is done right. But all can still enjoy it. Mostly for me it is peace of mind.

". . .peace of mind . . . " Perfectly said. Put a $6,OOO paint job on and worry every time you drive it or someone takes a close look. Preserved as is and drive with 'peace of mind'. I love the application. Shucks, not even fire can ruin a good patina finish, rather the fire purifies it, almost a religious experience thing, Greek style, i.e., "Phoenix" ! I guess only the 'celestially minded' can fully comprehend the "peace" that emerges!!!!
