Ulu Posted April 21, 2014 Author Report Posted April 21, 2014 Thanks to you all. I'll have to dig out the rest of this stuff when I have more access to it. Right now it's buried. But I take it the Desoto flange doesn't fit a 230 crank which means I bought a Desoto damper & pulley on a Dodge flange. I'll check their numbers tonight. I might just end up selling this engine and trans anyhow, but I want it to be complete and running one way or the other. Quote

Ulu Posted April 21, 2014 Author Report Posted April 21, 2014 Well, the hub with a flange, on the crank snout. Quote
_shel_ny Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 (edited) Flange ? Guess I am still confused. There is a hub. There is a pulley. There is a damper. Edited April 21, 2014 by shel_ny Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 There is a flange on the hub with threaded holes to bolt the pulley and damper too. Quote
_shel_ny Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 OK, I now understand Takes a while sometimes. Referring to it as a DeSoto flange, and a Dodge flange confused me. I thought some additional part was being referenced. As I listed in post 25, my book shows: Hub 677540 was the same D 37-54 P 42-49 C 38-54 DS 38-54 for vehicles without A/C or power steering The DeSoto "hub" is the same as the Dodge "hub", so it should fit a 230 crank without difficulty. Ulu Posted April 22, 2014 Author Report Posted April 22, 2014 Thanks. I don't have any parts manual at hand, so I don't have a clue what parts interchange, so I really appreciate all the help. Somehow I was under the impression that the postwar Desoto engines were all the big block 6 while Plymouths and Dodges were the small block 6 & Chryslers were all big block 6 or straight 8. But I don't have any evidence to back that up. I need to study the manuals again. Quote
desoto1939 Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 (edited) Even pre-war desotos uses the 25 inch block at least the 37 and up. Rich HArtung Edited April 22, 2014 by desoto1939 Quote
Ulu Posted January 3, 2015 Author Report Posted January 3, 2015 (edited) I was cleaning up the mancave and I finally found the damper that came on Edith's 218 when I bought her. This is a rivited unit, and still absolutely solid, so I intend to use it on the 230 Dodge engine. Originally I was concerned that it looked different than the one posted above, but I don't think it'll matter. Edited January 3, 2015 by Ulu Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 4, 2015 Report Posted January 4, 2015 Important part is the surface where the seal rides the hub. Speedee-sleeve will fix a groove. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted January 4, 2015 Report Posted January 4, 2015 Thats the proper 218 230 Plymouth damper. I like it! Quote
Ulu Posted January 4, 2015 Author Report Posted January 4, 2015 Great, thanks! She's in good shape and a quick polish on the seal surface will do it. No grooves here. Quote
