Good morning! I put my flywheel in the machine shop yesterday and started removing the exhaust and intake manifold. Got all the bolts out of both intake and exhaust manifolds but I can only get the exhaust to budge about 1/8 inch up front. Got the 4 bolts from the bottom of the exhaust to intake heat riser box, snapped one. But I have been prying and rapping this thing to the point that I know its not coming off without trying something else. In the past I've always found another bolt that I missed but I have all of them out I can see. It wont budge. I think its the 2 center studs in between the exhaust and intake holding it on. But how do I get those out? Has anyone else come across this and how did you get yours off?

I would really like to salvage both manifolds. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Be careful, I miss one and cracked the exhaust manifold.

I thought my manifold was loose and it also moved a least an 1/8 of an inch.

Just reread your post.  Can't say if the studs are the problem, for removing the studs use a tiny pipe wrench and a pipe on the handle.  I posted this technique for removing the studs from those fancy nuts used on the exhaust.

Thanks Don, 48ply.

It was the dang middle studs. I welded some nuts on the end of them and managed to get one out using a socket but the other one broke flush with the manifold. So I used a hack saw blade with a rag wrapped around it to cut the other one.

After I got thru it came off then I had to use a drift punch to get the stud out. Few good wacks with a hand maul was all it took. I guess that was the stud holding the manifold. Stubborn..

I have never broke so many bolts in my life as I have working on this car. But its seems to be getting a habit.

Dont forget the hidden bolt in the center of the exhaust manifold, directly behind the heat riser.

Hi I'm pulling off a 50 desoto manifolds ,and I got everything loose ,movement ,but no freedom ,must be the hidden bolt!!!,I looked on a few sites and everyone's cracked a few manifolds not knowing about it until afterward ,some say " up and under " now it's directly behind the heat Riser in the middle ,I'll bring a mirror on a stick and a flashlights get to see if I can spot it ,I'd given up and deferred to the " real" mechanic

refer to post 2. Count the attaching points. Confirm that you have found all 13 before getting a big hammer.

Rubber Mallet - Once all Bolts removed. Shingle Flat Bar.

You will probably beat a few Mallets into oblivion along the way. Add a can of WD-40 use it all.

2- Hours of wrestling I removed my Right Inner Fenders First - or else everything doesn't clear the Bolts.

Not a job for the faint of heart.

Good Luck.

Tom
