dodgeguy Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 Any body converted ign. on a 47d24 using the pertronix? how does it perform, hard to do? Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 Suggest you do a forum search for Pertronix. This subject has been cussed, discussed and evaluated from all angles. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 one comment only...as these are not commonly found in the big box store...what is your back up plan should you have a failure....and what if that failure is far from home...as I understand it the Pertronix rquires a point plate mod...may make limping in with a back up set of points a no-go,,,second distributor maybe....if you are 12 volt and or going to upgrade to 12 volts there are other options..as Don suggests, do some reading up..Pertronix wbsite has the install instruction available for download..get familiar see if this is the method for yourself...really, only you can make that call.. 1 Quote

Install sheats for a few 6v. pos. ground pertronix ign. setups. Your decision. I like them, easy install, hot spark start and all. Others like Not so much, read up. Barsteel Posted February 20, 2014 Report Posted February 20, 2014 You also might want to check out Langdon's Stovebolt website. Although dedicated mainly to Chevys, he does offer a complete HEI distributor for dodge/Plymouth flat 6s that's a "drop in", although you will have to convert to 12V neg ground. I just installed one on my '52 Cranbrook, and it engine runs so smooth and quiet that it's hard to tell it's running when the doors are closed. It starts with one quick flick of the key, and the distributor uses (I'm pretty sure) Chevy components internally, so fixing it would not be a problem no matter where you are. It's also a small cap format, so it doesn't look out of place on the engine. The complete setup (distributor, coil, plugs, wires, misc hardware) will run you about $220 shipped to your door, but it's, IMHO, worth every penny. Here's a link... http://www.langdonsstovebolt.com/store/#!/~/product/category=361515&id=1222043 Good luck. Chris Quote

My engine runs smooth and starts with one push of the starter button without an HEI distributor. Are there any additional benefits that make this conversion worthwhile? 1 Quote
Barsteel Posted February 20, 2014 Report Posted February 20, 2014 Don - I made the conversion to make the ignition as fail-safe and maintenance free as possible. Do points work? Yes, quite well, but I wanted the set the timing once, bolt down the distributor, and forget about it. Chris Quote
DJ194950 Posted February 20, 2014 Report Posted February 20, 2014 To ME, the one major advantage to the conversion to electronic ign.vs. points is: "Slightly" (to what point of worn unk.) worn dist. bushings do Not change dwell much as much if only slightly compared to points as the dist. cam no longer has anything pushing against it as it rotates-on high point of cam to flat spot of cam= less movement of the shaft. Translate into more consistent spark thru rpm changes. My .02 too much! Doug Quote

Niel Hoback Posted February 20, 2014 Report Posted February 20, 2014 Kented, what part number did you order? Was it 2563LSP6 ? I hope to hear that it works well. Quote
OldDad67 Posted February 20, 2014 Report Posted February 20, 2014 Any body converted ign. on a 47d24 using the pertronix? how does it perform, hard to do? I've been using Pertronix for close to 20 years in all my cars with no problem. Sure points work fine but trying to find good American points today is hard to do. With Pertronix I know my 57 Vette runs much smoother, and if you've ever messed with setting up dual points in a Vette you can appreciate the conversion to electronics. I personally have nothing against the stock setup but I wouldn't give up my Pertronix system. Just my two cents. 1 Quote
t-bag Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 I have the langdon conversion in my 37 ply. and it works great. When i bought points before they made you by rotor, cap and points as a set. Quote
