Neat idea Norm. But I'd buy a case of plain Zippos and have him do those instead. I'm sure folks would buy 'em.

If you really get lucky maybe you could hook up with that ebay guy that paid the crazy $$ for the NOS dashboard compass a while back.

Zippo lighters are code dated. There is no code date for 1947 and 1948. I wonder how the seller knows this is a 1948? Also wonder why the seller does not show a picture of the bottom of the lighter where the code date is stamped. For more information follow this link.

I carry two Zippo lighters with me when I travel. One is a 1967 model that I carried with me in Vietnam. The other is a 1980 model. I have a couple more Zippos at home. The ones I carry with me have been "rebuilt" by the factory under there lifetime warranty a couple of times. I mailed them to Zippo and they install new guts, reshape the case if required, and install a new hinge all at no cost other than the postage to send them there. They pay the return postage. How many other companies that have been in business 75 + years offer such a warranty?

Glad you posted that Don. Thanks. Have one I bought sometime in the 70's I'd like to date. Also sent that link to Joe. He' started to collect them and could use the chart as well if he hadnt found it already. Ed

This group is the best. I've got a couple zippos around too. I have my grandpas from the late 50s. Its got a guy bowling up the side with the pins on the lid. Its enamled in color. It needs a new hinge but I haven't made the plunge to send it back to them yet. Its too sentimental to lose to the mail or something.

Ed,

There might be a problem getting that Zippo repaired under the warranty. The warranty says they will repair or replace the lighter at their option. I sent one in years ago too. I think all they did was replace the case and send it back. Did not repair it. Just put a new case on it. So........with that in mind, they probably could not repair yours because it would cost too much to get it engraved and enameled the same as it was. You could try though.

The design part is fine its just the hinge that is bad. The little pin that holds the lid to the bottom is broken. I know they dont warranty the finish. I would certainly contact them to make sure I got the same one back before sending it in.

Don,

Did not know you smoked and you have and carry more Zippo's than I do. I only have one and I don't use it. It's cheaper to use the throw away lighters. In fact, I get those for free with my cigarettes. Since they last so long I have amassed a bag of at least around 40 or 50 of those. So, I'll probably never need to buy another lighter as long as I live.

The Zippo is a nice lighter. However, today it's a little harder to find the flint and fluid readily. I can get it at the grocery store. However, a few years ago the grocery store removed the cans of lighter fluid from the open shelves to behind the main service counter. They said it was to keep kids from buying it and setting fires, etc. However, you can buy a much larger can of charcoal lighter fluid off the regular shelf. Go figure.

There is also one big drawback to the old fluid type lighters like the Zippo. After refilling the fluid you don't want the thing in your pocket right away. Don't know how many times I refilled those years ago, stuck it in my pocket then the thing would leak. When it leaks in your pocket the fluid gets on you leg and gives you a chemical burn. That can be smarts on the old leg.

Ed,

Actually, I've never seen a Zippo go bad any place other than the hinge. That's the only weak point on those things.

Back in the day I carried a NIMROD brand lighter...never ever seen one with a LOGO...Think the only lighter I have now is one with a very risque bust shot...found it in my 52 Plymouth when I bought it years ago.

Tim,

Is that one of the lighters with the clear plastic case where the fluid goes. Ronson use to make those. On some of those the figure inside would float in the fluid. There were others with risque engravings too that were metal.

Nimrod was primary a pipe lighter..had the middle open with two holes..pull the ends apart and it lit and you could draw the fire down into the pipe bowl..my father was a pipe smoker and I just got accustomed to his..and yes I do recall at one time dad having a clear lighter with a fishing fly in the reservoir...

Norm;

I gave up the cigs a while back and now smoke a pipe. Lot cheaper to smoke a pipe these days. I can get close to 3 weeks of backy for seven bucks. Call me a skin flint if you like but I get flints for my Zippos from expired throw away lighters. Pop out the wheel and the flint falls out. I also buy naptha in quart cans at the hardware store. Naptha (sounds like I am lisping when I say that) is what lighter fluid is made from. Also works well as a dry cleaning agent to remove grease spots etc from car seats. A quart of naptha costs about the same as 4 ounces of lighter fluid.

Now I know why you need so many lighters.:D I gave up cigarettes for a pipe back in the early 80's for several years. While it's true I saved a lot of money smoking a pipe as opposed to the cost of cigarettes, it ended up costing me more money. That's because the pipe tobacco would rise up when I lit the pipe, then a hot ash would land on my shirt or tie. Then I had to keep replacing the shirts and ties. So........finally went back to cigarettes to save money.:D

Found out my Zippo is a 1937 model. I had been wondering for some time. Also amazed to hear I can send it in to have the hinge fixed! Very cool! Oh, and I only smoke an occasional stogey myself. Never smoked cigarettes in my life.

I can only imagine the crew of dirt-mongers that analyzed the photo of him smoking. "hmmm..., cigar looks like it could be Cuban, don't you think?" Could be Dano, let's get a team on it right away". These people need to GET A LIFE! There are huge ISSUES that need to be addressed for God's sake!

Your stash had too many seeds in it. That is why it would burn holes in your clothes.
