I was looking at e-pay and this guy has a pair of these he is pretty proud of.  $299 , but they are brand new.  I only need the right side, however the other side is deeply pitted and non perfect finish either.

This guy calls it a rear moulding extension ,,,once before someone here called it a benzel or bezel.  Is the bezel the immediate chrome shell of the lens ?,,,this piece sets below the lens holder.

 

Its the one that hold the red or blue eye as Dons pics have shown.  Think it is die cast pot metal. So what is the right term for this piece???

 

So even if I had a matching pair of pitted rusted ones,,,,how much would a guesstimation  of what having a pair reconditioned and rechromed,,,so they look like this brand new pair???

Hard to say what is the right price. Since The current owner has these NOS and you do not then he can ask any price that he wants and according to him that is the right price. This is Frank Mitchell that is selling these parts down in Georgia. Frank is known for high prices, but if he has what you want and you need it and no ones else has the part then he will get his price.

To have pot metal rechromed in triple plate you are probably going to pay the same price. If there are a lot of pits these have to be filled and then the metal polished to make it smooth or grinding the imperfection. This is time and money.

I would suggest that you take your to a platter to see what they will charge to replate in triple chrome and then you will have an idea of what to base your spending on the new items or recondition the old items.

Do you have a Parts Manual for your 50 Dodge?   If not, you ought to get one.  Available in original or reprint form on

eBay, usually.  It will have a name for the various parts and pieces that go on the car.  What the seller is calling it 

may be correct.

pot metal refinish is far more involved if down right than say regular plating like a bumper or over-rider.  An original willhave to stripped of chrome....and down to the pot-metal copper plate and brough back from there..filling of the piece with a good coper plate is now possible and when filled, recopper plated..and then the first polish begins so to finish the process...time intensive...more pits and pocks the more involved...time is money in this business and I assure you pay well for their time..but a properly finished piece is beautiful..some place just grind till the imperfection is gone...loss of root metal and contour and detail in this method..turn around is quick and the cost is less but you do not have a top line piece to reinstall ...again the phase that every hates...pay to play...hardly ever a way around it..

If you really need a pair, good NOS is hard to beat and his price is probably the cost of redoing yours. Also, as mentioned, how well done depends on the plater. I would contact the seller and check on "shelf wear" as well. Some NOS can actually be pretty beat up. From the picture it looks OK but why is the second one not shown??

If you work with the original parts books there are some dated terminology and more modern words have replaced them,

 

Radimeter  =  Heat Guage

 

Headlamp Door  =  Headlight bezel

 

and so on....

 

Hood ornaments are in the cooling section as a left over from when the rad cap had a hood ornament attached.

 

Actually quite interesting how the terms we use didn't exist when the books were printed......and how the original terms are not only outdated but always show up as a spelling error in spell check.
