By the way rustoleum makes a hammered bronze paint that is pretty close to the way the heater was originally painted if you wnat to got that way while you have it out and apart.  The chrome band withthe model number come off fairly easily.

He's right. I used a different color on mine but you can see the style of it in the picture I posted.

Thanks for the paint recommendations and the great idea to use a bike inner tube to do a light pressure test on the core. I was thinking of taking it to a radiator shop and then you magically answered the question I hadn't even asked. I love this forum!

Here's the gold version on my p15 heater and another shot showing the can.

This week I took the heater core to a radiator shop and they cleaned it up and made sure it's got no leaks. The bits are all sanded and cleaned up. And the painting has started.

I won't let myself start any other projects until this is done, so I'm hoping to finish it this weekend.

Looks good.  You will be impressed with the heat that these things throw, however, since there is no fresh air being circulated, the defrost function is marginal.  I have found that if you open the cowl vent a bit, and one of the vent windows slightly, the defroster works better, but still not as well as the later units that had a fresh air feed.

I was at a Car Show and swap meet this weekend and a gentleman gifted me two heaters, one of them was a Model 36 Mopar Deluxe. They look super classic.
