Has anyone done a volare ifs and retained the stock flathead? It seems to me that the front sump oil pan and the volare cross member are a problem. Perhaps there is a rear sump substitute. Gary

There are plenty of car rear sump flatheads around. Even the 39-47 trucks use a rear sump.

If you are good enough at fabricating to install a Volare ifs then you should be able to modify the pan if needed...

Didn't use a L6, but a 360.

There is plenty of room for the L6, If you're worried about the drag link.

I have a few Volare type crossmembers sitting out in the back.

I'll snap a picture of it with a flattie pan so you can see what it looks like.

Here's my deal from 2009.   Volare Experiment

Hey dodger, are you still driving that truck? Any updates on the serviceability side of things?

Still racing the truck. The hardest part is fighting the surface rust from the Bonneville salt. Otherwise all is good.

I've been working towards making "The Brick" streetable for day to day use (headlights, rear tail lights, etc...). I'm also making a change to the upper control arms of the rear suspension so I can adjust the camber.

This is a "Volare Type" Crossmember that has the original engine perches removed.

The L6 oil pan is positioned in the same location to the axle line of the stock set-up.

The front wheel center line (or axle center) is roughly 3 inches above the base of

the oil pan in a stock set-up. Here with the Volare crossmember its around 2.5 inches.

Plenty of room front to back. So, in my estimation...no problems getting it to fit without

interference.

Thanks guys, I'm not familiar enough with the L6 to know that some are rear sump and that is a big help. It appears that most  of these swaps include changing the motor out also and I was hoping someone had already done the heavy lifting keeping the stock engine. Tim the pics would be appreciated. Thanks!

Guess we were posting at the same time...lol.

I have several Pilot-House 1/2 tons here at my place, so it was easy to reference the location

of the oil pan to the axle centerline. the diference is so small that it won't really matter...like I

said, plenty of room.

The fun part will be getting the motor mount right. The geometry of the tranny and pedals will be important.

I would mock everything up a few times to get it right before the final welds. What's interesting about my build,

is both the shifter and throttle only need a cable. So the engine/tranny location didn't greatly affect the cab controls.

Take lots of pictures for us......we like pictures....lol.

Hey Oil Soup, I grafted a Volare front clip to my original 48 Panel Truck frame. I ended up not using it and built a complete frame with a Dakota clip. If you are thinking of doing a clip let me know. I'm not sure if the frames are the same, but I have the complete rolling frame that I'm not using. I would sell it to you cheap if you are interested. I live on the eastside at Houghton and Broadway, but the frame is at my parents house near Benson. I don't get on here much so email me if you might be interested, andrew slicknapier@yahoo.com or call/text 979-1539
