Bob_Koch Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 I just got a notice from PickNPull that a 49 pilothouse is at their junk yard in Fresno. No idea of what condition but anyone living nearby here's a chance to maybe get some parts. It's too far for me to drive. 1949 Dodge Truck (Pre-81)PICK-n-PULL FresnoFresno, CA Row: 147Added: Apr 16, 2013 Quote
pflaming Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 (edited) Wow, I will check that out. They seldom have anything that old. edit: Bob, thanks for the tip. I got an emergency cable, some nice knobs and bezels, and a nice driver's side mirror. Now I have to decide which style mirror I want. The truck is 99% complete. I took pictures but the uploads failed. The grill is stainless, has been painted but is dentless, the parking lights are really clean, rust free the lens nice an clear, hood props/both sides, and a complete engine. It is not a junker truck. It is a rust free valley truck. If I can figure out how to post will do so. If you are in need of something, pm me and I can run back on Monday. B1B Keven Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 Paul, If you can get the lower grille bar, I'll buy it. Speedo and gauges also. Quote
48Dodger Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 If you talk with the management.....in some cases they will sell the whole truck. Might be worth a shot. 48D Quote
pflaming Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 48Dodger, I seriously thought about that, but I have a convertible in the front garage that is calling. I thought about the engine, looks like it is a runner, for the vert, but I don't think it would hook up to the hy-drive. Most of what's there is in the engine compartment. It has a flatbed, but does have a nice pair of running boards, is a four speed, Well, don't have a long drive way for yard art so will pass. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 Paul if you DON'T grab the hard to find parts, I'll think you are crazy! Those grill bars would make a member here very happy if you could get them! Beyond that, I think a while back I posted my "short" list of things to get when I pick, I get those things regardless JIC someone here needs them and for the most part I've always ended up in the positive. pflaming Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 I didn't have all the right tools and ran out of time. I've got to be careful, this picking can get contageous and I live in a good valley for that, no rain here. I didn't expect it to be so complete so I took tools primarily if it had gauges which it did. I have a program with a great guy in WA. so I'm always looking for those. Will go on Monday and pick that truck more closely. Any suggestions as to specific things will be helpful. I now have a truck so have space to bring things home. I may check out the engine more closely though. The truck looked like it had been cared for. It has a nice bench seat in it, but I noted that the 49 does NOT have that permanent box on the floor like my '52 so it won't work for me. Turner wanted $70 for a pair of '54 Ply headlight rings that were not in good shape, I got a pair off this truck for pennies and these are near perfect. Gotta watch some of these wrecking yards. I never pay them what they ask. If they ask $300, I lay down two crisp $100 bills and work my way up $20 at a time, slower with each bill. They LOVE cash, no records! Quote

I spend five hours on that truck. It doesn't look the same now. I went today thinking things may not be there after the weekend. While picking, a man asked if the engine was a flathead. He needs one for his fork lift. So I passed on it. That is a sound body, would be a great candidate for restoring. Only one windshield glass was cracked all the rest are good. I got a radiator, that was a task, full undented grill, hood stays, head light rings and bulbs, complete parking lot buckets and lens, front D-O-D-G-E emblem. I left the tire carrier, just too much work to cut those bolts and I was tired. So. . . now I have to do tonight what I was going to do today in order to get to the Truck show tomorrow. This picking hobby is hard work. PF Quote

Jim Shepard Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 Paul, If you can get the lower grille bar, I'll buy it. Speedo and gauges also. Paul - be very careful when removing the grill bars. I broke off most of the studs from the first set I tried to remove from a donor truck. When I removed mine during the restoration, I removed the nose and put it on a table to get better access. It took almost a month of very careful twisting, heat, use of PB blaster, etc. Quote
pflaming Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 Always something new. I took one of the '49 grille bars to a body shop to find the best way to get the paint off . He told me to bead blast them. I asked if that would hurt the stainless steel, he replied, "Not on that bar. it' s not stainless, see the small rust spots on the back"? DUH?! Quote
B1B Keven Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 Someone has put steel grille bars (painted) from a '50 on it. I even did that at one time. Quote
