pflaming Posted April 3, 2013 Report Posted April 3, 2013 Installed a new water pump yesterday, test drove it, and it LEAKS. Check all bolts, still leaks. SO > > > I must not have cleaned off the old gasket properly and left a small piece of old gasket. So, off it goes. . . Got to make that BBQ Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted April 3, 2013 Report Posted April 3, 2013 Paul; Did you use something like Permatex thread sealer on the bolts going into the engine.....if not that may be all you need to do. Jeff Quote

pflaming Posted April 4, 2013 Author Report Posted April 4, 2013 Yes I did. I removed the pump, sharpened up the edge of agood putty knife and found I had be a bit careless. My permatex is all rubber I'm using a 3M seal a gasket for the sealer, the same sealer I used on the head gasket. Is that OK, I can still change. This is hard on knuckles, those core fins are sharp, will use glove tomorrow. Quote
1952B3b23 Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Might consider using some of this Permatex gasketing material i found on there site, supposedly its formulated for use on water pumps and thermostat housings. Heres the link: http://www.permatex.com/products/product-categories/gasketing/gasket-makers/permatex-water-pump-thermostat-rtv-silicone-gasket-detail good luck, -Chris Quote
Merle Coggins Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) I hate RTV silicones for that type of application. My favorite gasket sealant is Permatex #9 Tack and Seal. It's not as slick as RTV and will hold a gasket in place better. Edited April 4, 2013 by Merle Coggins Quote
