Charles Furman Posted March 14, 2013 Report Posted March 14, 2013 I backed one of my Mopar cars with a "Fluid Drive" transmission up a fairly steep incline for about 50 yards, then continued back for about another 60 yards on flat ground. I put the car in the forward low range and pulled forward. I then when I tried to put it back in reverse, I could not to it. Every time I move the shift lever to the reverse position I am still in a forward gear. I appears that I can shift from high range to low range and I can go to neutral just when I go to what should be reverse it remains in a forward gear. Anyone have any ideas or experience with this kind of problem? Quote
Charles Furman Posted March 14, 2013 Author Report Posted March 14, 2013 Vehicle is a 1950 Chrysler and I thnk the transmission is an M6, but I'm not sure of that. Quote
busycoupe Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 This is just a guess....If the motor mounts were bad then when you backed up the steep incline the motor and trans could have moved enough to make the linkage out of adjustment. You may want to look at the motion in the linkage. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 The engine shifted forward or backward under a heavy torque load because of the old motor mounts. You should check them and readjust your shift rods as per the factory shop manual. Bob Quote
Tom Skinner Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 (edited) Charles, Your Linkage Problems are solved! Go to: www.imperialclub.com Choose: Imperials by year Choose: 1948 Choose: Technical Box - Master Technicians Service Conference Choose 1949 Transmission Fundamentals Go to Page 21 where they will show you how to adjust your linkage to solve your problem. I had the exact same problem after installing a new clutch in 2008 in my Chrysler Royal. Tom Edited March 15, 2013 by Tom Skinner 1 Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 The real question is why after just driving it up a steep incline for a short bit did in then not go into reverse. The engine and transmission must be shifting around and that should be checked even though an adjustment will temporarily fix the problem. It would be bad if it did that again on a trip! Bob Quote
