Odd 1949-50 Dodge Car Hood Ornament Id Help

Recommended Posts

Guys,

I ended up with this hood ornament that looks the same as a 1949-50 Dodge car 1298935 but is 5 inches shorter in the rear. It is not cut down. The part number is 1298952.

Any help in IDing this hood ornament would be appreciated. I can't find it in any of my Dodge car books and I checked 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1953, and 1954 (the later books show ornaments from previous years, but don't list this one.).

Thanks,

Eric

An online source shows that the one with the grooved rams horn is from 49.  Maybe the downmarket Wayfarer had different trim from the pricier Meadowbrook and Coronet.  the Wayfarer was built on a 115 inch wheelbase, the Meadwbrook and Coronet were on 123 inch.  So maybe the hood was shorter.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll cover them as best I can below.

The ornament has the 1298952 number cast into the bottom as well as the DPCD symbol.

It might be Canadian, but I don't have a Canadian parts book to check.

The ornament is nearly the same as the 1949-50 1298935 ornament for the first 13 or so inches except the one I am asking about tapers down in size faster. Several factory parts books list the longer 1298935 as being correct for all 1949-50 Dodge cars.

The 1948-53 Dodge truck ornament looks very different (I have several of those on hand to compare as well as the longer 1298935 ornament).

I'm a bit lost on this one. Normally my books get me the answers I need. This is one of the rare times my book collection has failed me on a part with a cast number.

This picture shows the standard 1949-50 1298935 ornament at the back. The shorter one I am trying to ID, 1298952 in front of it and the 1948-53 truck ornament laying down in front of them both.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Eric

I will try to check my Canadian parts books tomorrow.

According to my Canadian Parts Book, it is from a D35 or D36, the Canadian version.

I will attach a picture from my car.

It is a 1950 Dodge Special Deluxe D36, Canadian.

1298952 also fits the 1949 D31 and D32.   The D31 and D35 were based on the 111" wheelbase Plymouth DeLuxe (P17 & P19) with the D32 and D36 on the larger Plymouth (P18 & P20).  The hood ornament not only fits the Canadian built, D31, D32, D35 and D36, but also the U.S.-built export Kingsway models.
